Boycotting stores with skeleton crews

I found what I needed at DSW, located a ladder, carried it over and climbed up ten feet to get my size. While I was moving the ladder back an employee materialized (the first one I'd seen) who said "you aren't supposed to do that" and then disappeared again.

Going to Home Depot is SO much better since they have customers a way to search for products and see aisle and bin numbers, for example. There’s no reason to require me to find a person to ask to search a database. I can search a database.

I can’t think of why I would need or want a human cashier, ever. Seriously, what is the upside? I’m just standing there while they do something I can also do.

When I go to the local hardware store, they have more knowledge than I do about how to use the products, do handyman work, etc. At Home Depot, they hire whoever so, yeah, there's no point in getting help from people who know nothing about flowers, tools, paint, joint compound, or wood.

+1. My Ace is fully staffed with old guys who know everything about everything. Home Depot is staffed by young women with fake eyelashes. Supposedly they used to be known fr hiring retirees part time who knew their stuff but they quit doing that.

Troll fail. You've never even been in a DSW.

First of all, the self service kiosks are often really annoying. The grocery store self check outs keep going berserk each time I don't place my item in the right place and then will also just randomly say I need to call a clerk. It drives me insane.

And second, self service seems easier now because human service is SO BAD. This was not always the case and shouldn't be. Have you ever been to an Asian grocery store? I go to Great Wall often and the people checking me out are so fast. Trader Joe's is also pretty decent when it comes to checkout speed. These stores actually need to train people and staff need to actually stay employed there long enough to be familiar with products. Good human service is always better than dealing with a stupid machine.

You know what else private equity owns as of recent years and is trying to keep at skeleton staff? The urgent care I work at. It’s miserable. Next time you have an extended wait time, call corporate and complain. But please god don’t complain to the poor front desk woman who is doing the job of 2 or 3.

Lol at the USPS comment. How do you think USPS can hire more people??

I'm in a similar public facing agency (not counter service though) and we are definitely a skeleton crew. All day I get yelled at by the public for how slow we are. And I do mean yelled at. There used to be 5 people doing this job last year and now there's only 2. Plus, the work has doubled. I've been told I lost those FTEs forever too.

Private equity needs to be outlawed. They're ruining so many companies. Namely dentist offices and vet offices.

Well the reason the urgent care I work for sold to private equity was because we needed money. Because insurance companies do not reimburse fairly for our work and if we staff correctly, and take our time with patients, we go bankrupt. So PE bought us and is jacking up how many appointments can be scheduled per hour, and cutting back how many people are working. It’s incredibly unpleasant and occasionally unsafe.

If you’re speaking to me (the urgent care doc) no, I can’t, because every other practice is the same (or going to be the same soon) and I have student loans and kids and bills. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all just quit our jobs.

Hiring fewer people is lowering costs and increasing profits. It doesn't lead to longevity of the business or customer loyalty but noone cares. The stock market is up so that's all thst matters. Would you pay 10-20% for something with good service? Because the companies aren't taking a hit on their profit. Welcome to unfettered capitalism.

PE formula:

Buy tested business
Turn it into an absolute sewer
Chop it up and sell it for parts
Low-wage and/or semi-skilled workers lose their jobs
PE vultures profit immensely
Repeat

At the bare minimum, it should be banned from operating any healthcare facilities.

Same. I will pick self service any day. I’m much quicker. I haven’t had problems with them in a long time. When they first came out they were unreliable but they’re great now. I don’t get why anyone (without small children) wants to go to an actual cashier.
