I so prefer self service. Just give me access to the systems. There’s nothing a cvs or grocery store employee can do for me that I can’t do faster myself. Going to Home Depot is SO much better since they have customers a way to search for products and see aisle and bin numbers, for example. There’s no reason to require me to find a person to ask to search a database. I can search a database. I can’t think of why I would need or want a human cashier, ever. Seriously, what is the upside? I’m just standing there while they do something I can also do.
First of all, the self service kiosks are often really annoying. The grocery store self check outs keep going berserk each time I don't place my item in the right place and then will also just randomly say I need to call a clerk. It drives me insane. And second, self service seems easier now because human service is SO BAD. This was not always the case and shouldn't be. Have you ever been to an Asian grocery store? I go to Great Wall often and the people checking me out are so fast. Trader Joe's is also pretty decent when it comes to checkout speed. These stores actually need to train people and staff need to actually stay employed there long enough to be familiar with products. Good human service is always better than dealing with a stupid machine.
