Boycotting stores with skeleton crews

Anonymous
I so prefer self service. Just give me access to the systems. There’s nothing a cvs or grocery store employee can do for me that I can’t do faster myself.

Going to Home Depot is SO much better since they have customers a way to search for products and see aisle and bin numbers, for example. There’s no reason to require me to find a person to ask to search a database. I can search a database.

I can’t think of why I would need or want a human cashier, ever. Seriously, what is the upside? I’m just standing there while they do something I can also do.

Teens do. With the exception of Chipotle, many others mentioned here won’t hire until 18. And even Chipotle is hard to get an interview around us. My son and friends have applied at so many jobs. Yes, they have even gone in person. They are told they have to be 18 or they aren’t hiring. He’s applied to Chipotle several times and never been called.

Not really. They may not hire for safety reasons. Pools are hiring.

Most teens are too busy with homework, sports and other ECs to build up their college applications to work.

This is an uneducated, irrelevant response. Go away.

It doesn’t matter what teens are doing or not doing when the reason for the under-staffing is the stores are being cheap with hours/staffing in order to scrape out a few extra cents in profit. Paradoxically, it’s only going to get worse if and when the general economic picture and unemployment gets worse. You’ll have more people looking for work, even in retail and food service, but consumer spending will also be affected, so these places will be on even more of a skeleton crew.

I generally agree with this - what's annoying to me is when places hold the online/mobile orders hostage behind the counter and then there's no employees to be found when I go to pick them up. I've had this happen with photo orders at CVS, food orders at a number of places that claim to have "pick up areas" (Panera, Potbelly, Chipotle, others), etc.

I went to DSW at one point and you had to check yourself out and bring your own bag. It was literally just a warehouse where you can try on shoes. I tried on a bunch, made notes on what I liked and ordered them online. The customer service is better online.

That was true in 2021/2022 but not anymore. The job market is very much on the side of the employers now. I’ve been told that some of these stores especially if they have district managers get bonuses for not spending all of their potential hiring dollars so they leave the stores on skeleton crews.

So dumb, because they kill their brand.

Teenagers have worked fast food jobs for decades. The only restriction is a meat slicer.

Yeah I think this is just a lag though and eventually stores will be built with robots to verify us and give us the order.

When I go to the local hardware store, they have more knowledge than I do about how to use the products, do handyman work, etc. At Home Depot, they hire whoever so, yeah, there's no point in getting help from people who know nothing about flowers, tools, paint, joint compound, or wood.

I don’t go anywhere I have to wait more than a few minutes to give them my money. This includes medical offices. The only exception is guess is DMV/passport stuff because you have no choice if online isn’t any option for what you need.

This is another reason to shop at Trader Joe’s. Plenty of staff and no self checkouts.

Agree with you OP

To be fair, it’s right in the name.
