6th grader wants to wear off shoulder and belly button showing tops

The butt cheek showers are rare and its a bit unfortunate to see but kids need to make their mistakes. I think people pity that or just find it silly, more than feel shocked. The shoulders and midriff is not offensive at all to me, a boy and girl mom. It's the fashion and has been a centuries old fashion in other cultures. The half butt hanging out hasn't really been a fashion staple in any current culture for a significant amount of time.

If another kid gets turned on by her shoulder that’s not something I can control. People have foot fetishes but we all wear sandals and flip flops in the summer.

Ok keep telling yourself this while the boy moms think your daughter looks like a ho.

Not clear why anyone would care what a "boy mom" would think.

Mom - if you aren’t comfortable with it, you can say no.

Now she may wear all of that underneath her appropriate clothes and strip down to it on the bus, but you can still sorry but your daughter isn’t allowed to go to school dressed like that.

+1. I got so much negative feedback on my outfits, Hair, etc etc. when I was a teen. I’m just not doing it. I want her to be confident as she goes into the world, not be finding fault with every part of her and every decision she makes. We talk about what’s appropriate to wear in different circumstances and that’s it.

Is there really any other good way to handle it than the bolded? And maybe a little bit about self-presentation or values, but otherwise, it's mostly appropriateness isn't it?

Pick her up at school and observe how the girls dress. Depending on her body type and the tops you help her select, maybe the midriff baring and off the shoulder will be minimal.

The comments I make in terms of DD's clothing have to do with fit and what compliments her body type. I may say, "That is very flattering on you" or "Let's see how the next one looks or It is okay" if she asks my opinion and is unclear as to whether she likes it or not. I emphasize comfort and movement in the clothing she selects but that is about it.

They are doing a sport. Similar to dance. Requires a certain uniform.

Nothing that they do requires bare legs and stomaches does it? They could just as easily wear leggings.

Do you have an issue with bare legs?

I don’t believe in weird policing or over sexualizing of girls bodies.

Your kid is sexualizing her own body for the viewing pleasure of the the other kids, staff and teachers. All the best to you.

This seemed like they were dressed for the wrong occasion to me.

Dress for the career you want.

You are just telling on yourself with these comments. Nobody except gross misogynistic weirdos think this way.

Exposing midriff not at all sexualizing. Dumb ass.

Are you sure about that? Why do you think they want to show off their stomach?

My daughter did varsity cheerleading Freshman year and no midriff was showing and the skirts weren’t trashy short. She also goes to a ballet school, which is not a sport, and they wear uniforms with tights. For some reason competition dancers wear flimsy cheap looking outfits. I’m sure there are some who don’t.
