Aspen Hill residents, give me your experiences with the place

We have lived in Aspen Hill for about four years and love it - we are near Berman Hebrew Academy and Rock Creek Valley Elementary and our neighborhood is quiet, neighbors are nice, and we love being close to the trails in Rock Creek park. It’s been a surprisingly convenient location.

Higher income Hispanics come from South American countries (Peru and Colombia mostly), from the west of Aspen Hill.

There are a bunch of really cool, modern 70s- era homes in the western neighborhoods of Aspen Hill. They remind me of the ones off of Old Dominion Drive in McLean from the same era. Large windows and a mix of tan brick and brown wood siding.

Aspen Hill really is a hidden gem. Too bad the neighborhood’s beloved high school (Peary) was closed in the mid 1980s due to declining enrollment.

Aspen Hill reminds me of Blues Clues because I always watched it at my grandmas house when I was 5 years old and she lived there

It has a new life.

There were a lot of South Americans that moved there in the 90’s that I recall. A lot were leaving because of war and political crises at the time. However a lot of them have now become bilingual in both English and Spanish and many neighbors there are friendly. I have been living there since 1995.

Isn’t Aspen Hill zoned to Rockville HS. That’s a very solid middle-of-the-pack MCPS school.

It’s an attractive area with large mid century homes (of all styles) for those that don’t mind car oriented suburbia. And nearby Rockville has that new pedestrian friendly town center. Still popular if overshadowed by the trendier Rose and Pike.

It’s a shame the county demolished the original historic Rockville commercial district in the 70s for the Metro adjacent, brutalist shopping/office complex and other government buildings.

OP here, we're looking to move to somewhere around the Barnsley/Flower Valley clusters, or if we can find a cheaper way out we can go through where east of 97 where it takes us to the Kennedy cluster, but I'm worried about that because I forgot to mention I have an only child who is about to be in 8th grade in the upcoming year and I've heard the middle school (Argyle) is also pretty bad.

Oh then yes you should come! One year at Wood and then you’ll be at RHS. My kids are thriving there. Join one of the pools (FV pool or manor woods) and your son will have a lot of friends around.

FV is more energetic than Barnsley and RCV. RCV on the other hand is very calm and vibrant and we don't really have a pool here.

I was working over there and stoped at Aspen Hill Shopping Center for lunch. I went in a Panera shop and there was two beggars outside asking for money. I went inside and ordered food, I sat down and the beggars came inside and started to bother me for money. I walked out top the car and left. I'm thinking, that area is just like northeast DC. A real dump with beggars.

The homes in Aspen Hill remind me of those near Lake Braddock Secondary School between West Springfield and Burke in Northern Virginia.

Aspen Hill is conveniently just up Georgia Ave from the Glenmont Metro. So Metro convenience should help maintain the area’s desirability.

Close proximity to the shadiest Metro Station in MoCo. You can get assaulted walking to your car from the Metro or go to the County Boy market. The area is desirable and tres chic indeed!

You sound unhinged. It doesn't even make the top 10:

That's Glenmont, which is down the road from AH.

I live near here, it's fine. Glenmont metro has always seemed fairly safe.

The Glenmont shopping center is just so so, Country Boy market is no longer open and was the only reason I went there anyhow, so doesn't sound like you have lived here in a while pp.

My neighborhood, which is more Glenmont than Aspen Hill, has been pretty safe except for a few car break-ins over the large 15 years.

The only downside is shopping and retail. For some reason, whoever owns the Glenmont shopping center is letting it deteriorate. There are some decent grocery stores around Aspen Hill but that's about it. And. Kohl's. Most of the time I shop in Olney and Rockville.
