To be honest, I always thought I only had 15 to 20 vanity pounds to lose, and when I went in for my physical, I found that I was in the obese range, my A1c had me in the prediabetic range and my cholesterol was high. I had already been trying to lose weight for a long time and couldn’t get it to budge. Perimenopause and insulin resistance Were also making it harder. I did decide to go on the medication at an extremely low dose and kept doing what I was doing – daily LISS cardio (zone 2), weightlifting 3x weekly, eating protein focused at a calorie deficit. I lost 40 lbs which it turns out is NOT vanity weight, changed my body and my life!! I’m slowly weaning off it and have a plan on how to maintain my weight loss without it, but if I can’t, I will absolutely go on an extremely low dose. There’s nothing worse for the human body than being obese and gaining and losing the same 10 pounds. That’s not vanity, that’s health, and it’s a gift to myself in honor of my beautiful children and my amazing family. For context I’m a 48yo female, 5’4”, went from 175 to 135. Almost NO side effects!! Many people go up to the max dose of 15 mg but I only got up to 3.5 mg and went up super slowly and I’m going down slowly, I’m already at 1 mg a week now and have a plan to taper off if I can. |
I'd rather be on it for life than an actual low life like yourself!! --someone who is 5'7, 135 lbs and not on any weight loss drugs. |
+1 |
These drugs have been studied for decades but whatever |
They have not been studied for weight loss for decades. There is not a lot of good data on the effects on weight of going off of them. I’m intrigued by them, but I want to see more evidence on their use specifically for weight loss. |
The studies I have seen are on diabetics or obese individuals. Can you point me to the studies on those who are normal BMI but use it to reduce even further? |
No - I gained it all back. ugh. |
I tried to go off of it, and I was ravenous! I didn't wait until I gained a bunch of weight. I am staying on a super low dose and focusing on eating healthy (versus not eating at all on a high dose). |
Some of us don't have decades to wait for scientific testing on a healthy population. |
My sibling was just denied due to history of thyroid issues. It was the first I've heard of this. |
Give metabolic altering drug to healthy person and hope for the best? Ok. |
I'm doing the same thing right now after losing over 100 pounds. I don't want to undo any of the positive changes I've made, although I will consider going without the medication if my weight and new habits feel stable. One massive benefit of the medication is removing the need to obsess about diet and exercise, which is something I've never had at any time in my life. In the past, I lost weight by making diet and exercising pretty much the most critical priority in my life, at the expense of everything else. On the medication, I am eating well, exercising, and fully engaged in other areas of life (family, work, social, etc.). |
Same. The mental health benefits of relieving my obsession with food (and alcohol) have been perhaps the best part, and it has freed me up to focus on new things like meditation and yoga. |
Can those of you who have had success with these drugs share which one you used? |
I"m curious if the data is showing tha tthe reduce intake is having more of an affect on weight loss OR the affect on metabolic health? Anyone know? I know plenty of very overwieght folks who have worked really hard to eat right, work out, but I don't know what mechanism works on them if this is the case? |
