How Do You Handle Guest Coats Without a Closet?

Anonymous
Lay them on a bed in a guest bedroom or your bedroom.

That is what we do (servers for private parties/events) when there is no closet or a very small closet.

Here is your hack: over the door hooks. Get a few, place them over doors. Should be enough to meet the need.

As much as you’d like to control this, someone will go upstairs without you knowing and get their own coat.

I have memories of helping out at my grandparents' annual Christmas party. This would be back in the 1980s. Even in comfortably off houses, the hall closet was nowhere big enough to accommodate everyone's coats. Especially not the heavy fur coats the older ladies always wore. So my job was to ferry the fur coats upstairs to a guest bedroom and lay them on the bed. And then later we kids would sneak upstairs and the girls would have fun trying on the fur coats. Mink was always the favorite. And there was always that one discreetly departing guest who'd come upstairs for her coat and catch us in the act and she always laughed and pretended to scold us.

To this day the musky smell of a full length mink with the hint of Chanel #5 and the face powder that was popular back then is something I always associate with ladies of a certain generation.

This is endearing.

My 10 yr old has internalized that anything that needs a battery change is his job.

Aww I love both of these.

What a great and specific memory. My parents bedroom was the coat room during their parties. My memory is of the strong smell of leather coats and cigarettes. All of the coats smelled like cigarettes. Which is interesting because everyone just smoked in the house back then. They didn't need to huddle outside in their winter coats to smoke.

We don't have a coat closet but we have a row of hooks on the wall that I clear for gatherings. I love the collapsible coat tree idea.

+2 Ikea racks

I rolled around in the fur coats on the bed back in the day (I still have not confessed to my mother). I support not doing fur anymore but I remember the feeling as a little kid and it was pretty great

Now, as an adult, I find that kind of gross--some people don't wash their coats frequently enough, coats will brush against other gross things (like the walls of a subway car, etc.) I don't want that on my bed!

You could buy something like this

and some hangers. You might even know someone who has one and will let you borrow it for your event.

Oh my gosh! I'm a grandmother and have never before thought about what you said. Have been putting guests' coats on our bed for years. Will definitely need to come up with another plan!

Why not just cover your bed with a spare sheet, or take the bedspread off, then just wash the top sheet all the coats were on once it’s over?

My thinking is to collect them as they arrive taker them upstairs and bring them down as they leave.

Out on the deck??

Can't they leave their coat in their cars for what like 30 seconds? kids and elderly's go on a chair by front door. So answer is a chair or bench by front door.

Old school humble method: Coats can be placed in a master bedroom bed. New school Amazon reality: Buy am an accordion collapsable coat rack on Amazon you keep in a closet or under that bed till the day of the party.
