How Do You Handle Guest Coats Without a Closet?

Wouldn't guests be SITTING on the sofa?

I put command hooks up and remove them later.

My son takes them and puts them on his bed. Not sure how, but he internalized that as his job at a young age and he is very good at it. He likes remembering which coat belongs to which person.

And you, with your unhelpful post, aiding the decline. OP, I use a clothes rack in a first floor bedroom that I keep folded under the bed.

This is what we did for our parties when we lived in a loft apartment. You just walked into a big space with no coat closet. We bought 2 racks off amazon. It was better than a closet because guests could easily grab their coats when they left.

I’ve been driving my ILs crazy for 25 years with these shenanigans.

Same here! For some reason, this drives my MIL nuts. But she looks for reasons anyway.

OK, but what about a chair, any other flat surface. Are we really at the point where we crowd sourcing where to put coats on? We don’t even know what her house looks like, with the layout is. We are really getting dumb as a society.

Keep in mind that we are much more isolated as a society than "we" were even just 60 years ago, and sometimes I think people post here just for interaction and that tiny bit of connection it brings.

This is endearing.

My 10 yr old has internalized that anything that needs a battery change is his job.

OP here. Jeez why are some of you so nasty. May be I am from a different country or I can to plan, or I might have had experiences which makes to plan better or expect my guests needs and how to accommodate it.

Thanks for those who helpfully responded. In 2025 I want to build more relationships and wishing my efforts will result in meaningful relationships.

You don't have a foyer with a closet in yiur house?!

Even in my house in Romania, it has a large foyer with a stand alone cabinet we use for guests coats. Do you live in a yurt OP?

Can it hold 20+ coats, though? Most coat closets aren't large enough for a party's worth of winter coats!

If you have a good place to store it and you like hosting parties, get a metal folding coat rack. They’re useful for closet clean outs and such too. Put it in a bedroom and hang the coats.

Exactly! And while I don't live in a yurt, I don't have "large foyer", let alone with room for a stand-alone cabinet large enough for 15+ winter coats. I do what my parents always did when they hosted parties -- pile the coats on a bed. The sight of a bed heaving with the weight of 40 heavy coats is a sign of a good party.

You can buy or rent a coat rack from a party rental place. Some of them rent hangers, too, or you can buy cheap plastic hangers.
