I'm hosting an event at my house with 15 guests on a very cold day, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to manage their coats. I don’t have a closet for storage and want to avoid a pile-up. What strategies or creative solutions have worked for you in similar situations?
My thinking is to collect them as they arrive taker them upstairs and bring them down as they leave. |

Your solution is what people have done for ages. They go on a bed in the most easily accessible bedroom. Close all the other bedroom doors.
As much as you’d like to control this, someone will go upstairs without you knowing and get their own coat. |

Yes, I remember growing up as a kid with big events at my grandparents house, which only had a small coat closet. Coats went on the master bedroom bed.
Now, as an adult, I find that kind of gross--some people don't wash their coats frequently enough, coats will brush against other gross things (like the walls of a subway car, etc.) I don't want that on my bed! You could buy something like this https://www.target.com/p/heavy-duty-garment-rack-brightroom-8482/-/A-87373732#lnk=sametab and some hangers. You might even know someone who has one and will let you borrow it for your event. |
| We have some coat trees from IKEA. They unscrew and are stored most of the time as a pile of poles in the furnace room. When we have parties, we put them in the hallway near the pantry or in my 1st floor office. |
| Put them on the sofa or put them on your bed. This is not rocket science. |
Bed in guest bedroom or any bedroom. This is nothing more than common sense 101! |
I didn't think that. Will have all upstairs bedroom doors closed and have the coats on the stairway. Thanks |
I agree, gross to put them on bed. OP |
| As pp said, some guests will want to grab their coats before you get to it. I'd put them on a bench in the public area. |
| Rent a coat rack. |
| Growing up, we used a (foldable) card table in the foyer right when you walked in (parents entertained a lot)! |
| But a long roller coat rack on wheels, like that they bring in for models. It folds flat when not in use because you can pop the top off. |
| I can’t believe OP had to crowdsource this. Good lord is our country in decline. |

Don’t worry, OP. I won’t wear a coat! I can’t stand driving with a jacket on so my outerwear lives in the backseat of my car. I can deal with freezing temps for the 1 minute it takes me to leave my car and walk into your house.
I’ve been driving my ILs crazy for 25 years with these shenanigans. |
| There's a chaise lounge by the door, and they all just get piled on there, along with purses. |
