Your solution is what people have done for ages. They go on a bed in the most easily accessible bedroom. Close all the other bedroom doors. As much as you’d like to control this, someone will go upstairs without you knowing and get their own coat.
I have memories of helping out at my grandparents' annual Christmas party. This would be back in the 1980s. Even in comfortably off houses, the hall closet was nowhere big enough to accommodate everyone's coats. Especially not the heavy fur coats the older ladies always wore. So my job was to ferry the fur coats upstairs to a guest bedroom and lay them on the bed. And then later we kids would sneak upstairs and the girls would have fun trying on the fur coats. Mink was always the favorite. And there was always that one discreetly departing guest who'd come upstairs for her coat and catch us in the act and she always laughed and pretended to scold us. To this day the musky smell of a full length mink with the hint of Chanel #5 and the face powder that was popular back then is something I always associate with ladies of a certain generation.
