John Oliver slams Democrats who think transgender people lost them the election

Anonymous
I don’t think being seen as the party who wants taxpayers to fund gender affirming care for undocumented immigrants and prison inmates or who favors transgender women competing in women’s sports helps Democrats politically, and it probably does hurt them to some degree, but this was not near the top of the list when voters were polled on which issues were most important to them. I don’t think this is why Kamala lost.

If you're "pointing the blame at one specific demographic" for Democrats' losses in last week's elections, you're gravely "missing the mark," according to John Oliver.

The comedian tackled Kamala Harris' defeat during the most recent episode of Last Week Tonight, calling out supposed progressives who have turned against transgender people and blamed so-called "woke" issues for Donald Trump's win.

"It's telling how quickly some are jumping to predetermined conclusions that don't match the campaign that just wrapped up," Oliver said. "For instance, some Democrats are loudly claiming that the party needs to move to the center."

The host then referenced comments from New York congressman Tom Suozzi, a Democrat, who recently argued that "the Democrats have to stop pandering to the far left ... I don't want to discriminate against anybody, but I don't think biological boys should be playing in girls' sports." Other Democratic lawmakers have made similar claims in the wake of Harris' loss.

If you watch the clip, he is very forcefully rejecting the argument Suozzi made.

And he is forcefully wrong.

Anyone with school-aged kids knows this is not a small issue. It’s pervasive. Its in the schools, its in the doctors office, its everytime I fill out a form and get 13 choices for my child’s gender. I know I’m not the only mom who switched my vote to republican this year over it. [/quote]

Wait till you start touring colleges and at every school the college administrators begin with announcing their pronouns. Every breakout group we participated in began the same way.

It’s utterly depressing to realize that unless I send my daughters to some fundie college, I have absolutely no choice but to spend 200k+ to have this idiocy normalized to my kids by the adults that they hold in high esteem.

It sounds like you should send your kids to a Christian school that has your values.

Maybe John Oliver will be funny rather than histrionic again some day.

Yep - anyone with a kid in middle or high school knows that while yes, while the number of transgender students may be small it is most definitely pervasive. It’s not a small issue. It can’t be avoided by those who don’t fit the profile of being trans (which, let’s face it, is mostly white girls on the autism spectrum/have other mental health issues/quirky in some way or is a theater kid).

Exactly. But I take solace in that my kids (who just graduated college this year) at least are adults at this point and already have their own beliefs and values. They just roll their eyes and go with the flow because they know the fear of cancel culture...but ask me who they voted for?

This is about trans girls in sports not trans boys in theater.

Just the body language, the fervent religiosity, the absolute believe in his own rightness: it’s all remarkable. If you turned the volume off, and substituted graphics having to do with the evangelical Christians, you could not tell the difference based on body language. It’s quite something.

+1
I can't watch him for exactly that reason. He practically froths at the mouth and his eyes get that glassy, crazy look to them. He is turning into a zealot for the left.

Why do you need to “avoid” the issue of its so small? Let people live their lives. Stop obsessing over it and you’ll stop noticing it.

I don't look at trans people any differently than anyone else. What is the big deal? All you’re being asked to do is not discriminate or bully them. Is that really too much to ask?

It makes Democrats seem very fringe. It's not how Kamala framed the campaign but Republicans were very successful in what they highlighted for people. I'm a D and very much wanted her to win but Dems have definitely lost the narrative on this. It's framed as impacting kids, schools, sports and these all feel very personal to many.

DP. Asking that biological girls/women only compete with other biological girls/women is in no way "bullying or discriminating" - against anyone. It's simple fairness. There is no way a female can physically compete with a biological male. And by not acknowledging this, you are denying science - simple as that.

I'd love to see Bill Maher's take on John Oliver.

+100 -- but it's ok to bully/use peer pressure for other students to using pronouns they/them to try and normalize it??

And that’s why you lost. When you kick people out of the party for not agreeing to the most absurd notions like trans girls belong in girl’s sports, they vote for the other guy.
