USYNT U19 Gets Smacked 3-0 by Spain

Fair point but I will say that there is some psychological damage to being told you’re not good enough. Takes the wind out of your sails but it is true they should suck it up and ask the coach to come to practice or whatever

As for US it is very true that they are chasing shadows. That works when you can out athleticism your opponent but against a tactical sound team you will be crushed. There are at least 10 countries that can outplay US athletes and that number is growing

There is more than one way to build a winning soccer team. Each country should lean into their strengths instead of trying to copy what others do when you don’t have the necessary ingredients. US strength is athletic players so that’s what we lean into. It’s worked in the past. Germany plays a different strategy from England from Spain from Japan from Canada from the US. It’s always been like that

The problem is “leaning into athletic players” has stopped working.

Spain has proven this.

Keep leaning into athleticism and enjoy being a mediocre squad

My daughter is talented but not elite. Had privilege of going up against izzy engle and Maddie Dahlin. Two athletes for sure and she could easily handle them. That’s telling…

It’s not really a choice. Athletic is our best chance. We can’t build a program to play like Spain in this country. We just don’t have the necessary knowledge, culture, history, infrastructure, coaching, to draw from. We have to be realistic.

We used to be able to get away with nepotism/favoritism/paying off but the women's teams around the world have caught up to us and will continue to outshine us as long as our system is not merit based.

This. Our women’s teams were the best because no one else was putting money into theirs. We did a great service by getting respect for women in soccer across the globe. The Americans are good at fighting for equality and making a stink, but not so much actually good at soccer.

By continuing to select Athletic over high iq players US Soccer is signaling that’s the type of player and playing style they prefer.

Other countries will continue to build on what Spain has done and America will lose more and more often.

Sigh… US Soccer needs a house cleaning.

The US has everything it needs to dominate. Just need decision makers that have a clue. I recall coaching a u10 team that had all the talent i the world and only 2 out of a deserved 6 were selected for the top u11 team. Not one of those that made the top u11 team are involved in soccer today…rich parents and greedy clubs is what it’s all about

Spain is just applying what they’ve done in hundreds of years of mens soccer to women’s soccer. We don’t have that ability. Even if we selected different players we wouldn’t know what to do with them. The problem is the US doesnt have all these high iq players to choose from like Spain where soccer iq is part of the culture

While this may be true.

Not addressing and putting effort into being competitive at the highest level isn’t going to work.

I guess US Soccer just has to lose before they get with the modern game.

Btw my daughter is mid sized, has normal speed, and is on the younger side of 2010. When she’s on the field the team scores. When she’s not they don’t. It’s been like this for multiple teams. This is because she’s been playing field since 3 and futsal (year round) since 6. She’s never received a Talent ID invite because these are not the type of players US Soccer is looking for. What I see a lot of is big fast forwards and big defenders. Something is wrong with this picture. There’s a whole spectrum of talent that’s being overlooked.

What you’re describing occurs to players that play 6 and 8. This is because US Soccer doesn’t value non scoring mids. They think they can find true defenders that can also play mid vs a true midfielder that can also play defense. This type of mentality is why Spain was able to beat the USWNT.

Well said. What is disturbing is that any decent soccer brain knows that if you win the middle you win the game yet we can’t find a mid if our life depended on it

Is this women or men?

USMNT (U19) = men

USWNT (U19) = women

I think most are discussing girls YNT teams and players.

If the boys YNT selected talent the way girls recruiters do they'd get slaughtered. Of course you’d want speed, size, and power but if soccer iq isn’t there boys would quickly expose and exploit. You can’t just put athletic on the boys/men’s side.
