USYNT U19 Gets Smacked 3-0 by Spain

For starters nobody on this threat is suggesting doom and gloom. Instead their is a legitimate query into how the soccer world in the US works starting with the pay to play ecnl monopoly, lazy college coaches and a seemingly lack of understanding how tactical play by high iq strong fundamentals players trumps athleticism at the highest highest of levels. The comment about pros recruiting college players sorta makes the point about the flaws of how we do things. The college pool is really the only game in town. By the time it gets to that point the kids that could truly play the game the right way are demoralized and likely out of the game. So while the ones that play nwsl are the best of the best they are the best of the best that rose to the top in a flawed system.

The world has without a doubt caught us and a few are now good enough to beat flat out because of the ecnl to college pipeline. That is not to say that such system hasn’t or doesn’t produce some really great players. It is far too obvious for any objective observer to see the flaws that exist because of that system. The comment about college soccer is spot on. Bad touches and bad pass all over the place leading to slow play and a difficult to watch game. College soccer coaches have no pressure to win. As a college soccer coach you hang around for decades with a losing record.

Same can be said for most soccer coaches here in any platform or league. This is where the large argument stands to implement pro/rel and start rewarding coaches, players, clubs etc for actual merit and not some marketing tactics.

I would agree if you specified youth or high-school soccer but there is pressure to win for collegiate level, especially D1 schools. I believe most universities will release coaches after the initial contract is up if they have a losing record and no signs of improvement. If they are able to put a winning streak together towards the end, that could save their job.

4-5-1 formation for far too long! Forces us to play defense and we had quite a few defensive errors... both Ream and Vickers looked slow and sloppy. Colombia were quicker and sharper than us. Should we start a new thread?

Soccer in the US is all bluff, and marketing, popularity of the club and the coach name takes mediocre players to NT rosters and college roster. You see propaganda like this, youngest player with 200 days to score and that, the first with 201 days of this and that, first sisters to be in the pro league, what’s next? First trans youngest player to score? First blonde, first brunette, first redhead?
