I've always found this weird about Catholic schools

I don't think OP cares that the wealthy sen their kids to good schools. OP probably just don't like Catholics. I personally agree with the fact that this large very politically involved organization is filled with hypocrites. From giving hitler comfort to sex abuse scandals etc.

Ah, anti-Catholicism. The last bastion of socially acceptable bigotry. Nice, PP.

Can't we recognize that the Catholic Church has behaved shamefully with respect to the pedophiles within, and has also served the poor? And that independent Catholic organizations that have nothing to do with the pedophile scandal have also served the poor? Catholic schools have taught more poor children than any other religious denomination.

Can we also agree that teachers unions that are the bastion of public schools do much to protect pedofiles...hmmmm there is bad behavior everwhere. But back to OP's original rant. As a wealthy person who worked damn hard to get there I am completely in disbelief that you feel I don't have a right to send my child to an elite Catholic school. Where should I go if I want an a catholic education? Should I be forced to go to a subpar public to even the field for you since there isn't a parish school nearby? Gimme a break.

WHAT??? Teachers unions protect pedophiles? Please provide one example of that, just one.

And ultimately the school has to pay it's bills and that can't happen without funds coming in.

All of the students enrolled have parents who pay taxes to support the public schools and then pay tuition on top of that. So see? We're already providing "scholarship money" to all the public school kids. If the church closes all of it's schools and dumps thousands of kids into the public schools what would happen? In other cities parochial schools are still provided school bus transportation and non-religious books from tax dollars. DC can't afford that.

The only Archdiocesan Catholic High Schools in the area are Don Bosco Cristo Rey in Takoma Park (has a work study component to off-set tuition) and John Carroll High School. All of the other schools are run by religious orders or privately run (although I'm pretty sure they are all run by an order).

Because that would be way too complex: ambiguity is difficult for simple minds to understand. But the real issue is that OP just wants to hate Catholics, and nuanced thinking (like your post) or facts (like other PPs have offered) just get in the way.

OP, we are still awaiting your answer to the question of why you didn't go after Sidwell or the Cathedral schools, arguably the two most "elite" schools in the area, and both religiously affiliated. Your own hypocrisy simply reeks!

Return of the catholic bigot....

I know that some doubt her existence. But does OP's original post really leave any doubt?

Come on, OP. Let's have an answer! You can't expect us to respond to your post trashing catholic schools, and then fail to respond to our questions to you!

OP here. Sorry I don't sit on these boards waiting to jump and defend myself. I know there are about a million Gonzaga moms in the area so I'm outnumbered. First of all I don't care if you send tour kids to an elite school. We can actually debate if the Catholic schools are actually elite when stacked up against the Big 3 but that is a different fight for another day. Secondly when the we start hearing about Anglican pedophiles, or the presbyterians trying to change our reproductive laws, or Methodists supporting dictators then maybe we'll scrutinize them more. Until then we'll talk about the Church that moves the accused around so they don't get caught that spends hundreds of miilions on lawyers while kids go hungry then it's bishops have te gall to oppose health care reform. "Hypocrisy" is definitely a word that describes OP. So does "immature."

So ... is OP (a) a bigot, or (b) merely a frustrated 13-year-old whose school regularly loses sports events to catholic schools?

Okay, at least you clarified your position. You hate the Catholic Church so you thought you'd trash Catholic independent schools on the DCUM independent schools thread as one outlet for your anger. Folks, let's let this thread go to deserved oblivion--the original post is utterly illogical and it was meant to stir up trouble.

OK, clearly your problem is with Catholic policies. So don't join the catholic church, it's that easy.

But why on earth are you starting a thread to complain about how catholic schools deal with poor students???!!!! It's completely hypocritical on your point, because (a) it's completely unrelated to what you seem to be concerned about, i.e. policies of the catholic church, and (b) your information is totally erroneous, as others have pointed out, and you obviously didn't bother to research the issue yourself before starting this thread.

As another poster pointed out, you need to learn to separate the reprehensible pedophile incidents from other very good things the catholic church has done. Here is a column from Nicholas Kristoff on the subject: http://kristof.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/04/17/the-other-catholic-church/. Maybe your mind isn't sophisticated enough to grasp this, however.

No, I'm not a Gonzaga mom - my kids went to Grace Episcopal, FWIW. I'm not catholic either. I'm just another poster pointing out your hypocrisy. So whining about being outnumbered isn't going to help, or in any way convince people that you have a shred of a point re catholic schools and the poor.

hypocritical on your part, not hypocritical on your point. Sorry, typing too fast.

But OP is a complete and total hypocrite, by any definition!
