FCPS HS Boundary

It's because the school board is quietly starting to attempt to reboundary the whole county for socioeconomic balance. They had a non-recorded meeting about it last month.

Good. They should do a complete boundary study.

Since when haven't people paid attention to school boundaries when looking at houses in NoVa? It's spring buying season so expect more posters bringing up boundaries, especially with several members of the new school board calling for a county-wide boundary review.

And sheeeeeee's back!! Please quote these school board members, with citations.

DP, but the relevant meeting was February 8 as they discussed the two elementary schools needing immediate redistricting studies. It’s on YouTube and pretty easy to find statements of them calling for a county-wide redistricting study. PP’s statement is completely supported by facts, so I’m not sure why you are upset about it.

Agreed. You should report those to Jeff. I reported this thread for the same reason.

I’m guessing they won’t get taken down because we’re all different posters, they are non-controversial original posts, and they are topics that are directly relevant to FCPS moms.

Assuming I’m right, I figured I would offer you two an alternative to reporting legitimate threads.

You aren’t required to read threads that don’t pertain to you or that are on topics that don’t interest you. If you open a thread and find that you don’t care for the topic, you don’t need to spam the thread, you can just move on.

Best of luck!

Well said.

About time they looked at the district as a whole. Even if it doesn’t change anything for your school, you should be glad that the board isn’t pandering to any one group.

Looking at the district as a whole would force them to admit that some schools have to be higher poverty that FCPS itself deemed acceptable in a study they commissioned https://www.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/files/9DG4KP71B0DB/$file/fcps_tipping-point.pdf while other schools will have minimal poverty rates. It's much easier to just chug along

What practical effect would have on evaluating boundaries?

I find the group that is so desperate to not have the County look at the boundaries hilarious. They really can't believe that there are multiple people who think that the boundaries need to be evaluated and adjusted. The constant claiming of a single poster who is happy with the evaluation is clearly their attempt to try and negate the opinions of people who think differently then they do.

Believe it or not, there are many people who think that the boundaries need to be reevaluated and for a variety of reasons.

For some folks it is about trying to redistribute the poverty in high poverty areas that border higher SES areas.

For some posters it is about decreasing over crowding by moving kids to under enrolled schools that border their area.

Those are the two main reasons that I see from people who support redrawing the boundaries. There might be some other reasons out there as well.

How about engaging in conversation instead of drowning out a different opinion then yours?

Agree. A boundary study could provide insights that have been overlooked.

Others believe that the main reasons that some people support redrawing the boundaries is that they either anticipate a boost to their own property values, or they don't want to pay the taxes necessary to support treating some schools - the ones that have not been renovated or received additions - fairly, even though many other high schools have received decent renovations or additions (including schools that were not in the 2008 renovation queue that have received additions).

In addition, others believe that the impediments to FCPS - a division that has not been a model of good planning over the past 15+ years when it comes to boundary changes - to successfully pulling off a county-wide redistricting are too great and that it's better for FCPS to limit boundary changes to those situations where they are absolutely necessary.

As for Robinson and Lake Braddock, it's highly unlikely anyone will get moved from Lake Braddock to Robinson unless it somehow occurred as part of a county-wide redistricting, which as noted above is something that's easier to talk about than pull off successfully.

Any guesses as to when the SB will
Commission this supposed boundary study?

Also, any idea about Chantily and Westfield boundaries? These two schools are like Night and day.

In what way?

The only way a school should matter. Education/ course opportunities and scores. Visit US News for the metrics.

Is there a ranking of US public school systems (not by school)?

The only place you can buy in FCPS and guarantee your kids will never be redistricted is in City of Fairfax. The city owns the schools and pays FCPS to administer them.
