My wedding was private, we offered a meal to close friends.
Instead of gifts we asked our friends to donate the money to a charity in my home country.
DH is a sales person and I'm a nanny. We live a very simple life and I just can't understand how come people spend so much while there's so many around us who need our hand.

Well aren't you so alturistic, do you want a prize?

Anyways, good for the Clintons!!! This sort of excess is great for the economy. They are spending a shit ton of money that helps keep the lower wage earners collecting their paychecks. This large scale event means a lot of money and WORK for a lot of people who are supporting this event.

Do you think the waiters working the event and the security staff (often police officers picking up extra cash to supplement their already slashed salaries in the BROKE state of New York) are sick about the Clinton's spending money?

It amazes me how people just completely don't understand that many low wage earners who might not be educated with few options depend on spending of people with disposable income. Money trickles down. Hello? The lights are on, but anyone home?

Was your father POTUS and mother SOS? Yea, didn't think so.

I am curious as to how they're handling gifts. Lots of children who are not wealthy ask guests invited to their birthday parties and Bar Mitzvahs to donate to a charity. It's a lovely gesture.

I doubt it's really $3M. But even if it is, I don't care. They're loaded and if you think about it, they're putting money into the economy, which right now isn't a bad thing. The amount includes things like security, which wouldn't be part of a normal wedding, and probably the rental for all of the rooms at the venue, which would come out of guests' pockets at a normal wedding.

the only expensive weddings that bug me are when the family is putting more urgent needs on hold and spending that money on the wedding. I think it's silly when young couples who live in rental apartments have huge $100K weddings - would make more sense to take most of that money for a down payment on a condo/house. But hey. Not my problem.

I'm not a fan of the Clintons at all but I really think it's the media that is making up these numbers. I think if it is true..great! If that's how they want to spend their money, fine by me. But really...IT'S THE MEDIA! They are probably sitting on their couch watching this nonsense saying "what are they thinking."

With all the shit that Chelsea put up with they should be throwing her a $10 million wedding. I had a wedding that was within my (modest)means, she is having a wedding that is within her less modest means. Go get that Vera Wang sister!

To the nanny and everyone else who thinks it's excessive - why don't all the families who employ nannies, etc., give up their hundreds of thousands of dollars a year jobs and go work for non profits? Then poof, no one can afford nannies, and you will be unemployed.

Is that what you want? Why should people literally give up their lives for years to go to grad school and to work killer hours for years on end, only to give it all up so a $40,000 a year nanny won't have to feel cheated, or less "equal." It's socialism, pure and simple.

Where should your angel's wings & halo be shipped?

Eh, it's their money. I'm mostly indifferent. Maybe a little disappointed that they chose such excess, which seems at odds with other parts of what they say/advocate.

But, I haven't spent more than the time it took to write this post to really dwell on it at all.

No. They are spending their money within their means. They already do a lot of charity and should be able to enjoy the money the earn.

For those of you disgusted, what do you suggest they do?

Throw all the world's money in a pool and just dole it out equally so the world is fair and virtuous? We can have 10 % of the population making big bucks so all of us can live equally and sing kum-by-yah.

I don't have a problem with them spending money like that. I do have a problem with the so-called "limousine liberal" attitude that suggests imposing liberal values on society while enjoying lavish "republican" values for yourself and your family.

As a moderate democrat, I find the hypocrisy appalling.

To 11:06 - this is why I left the democratic party and became a republican. Too much hypocrisy. That, and with a family income in excess of $250,000, I was tired of being rich in Obama's public pronouncements.

Yes, because Republicans do not donate to charity. This is a tenant of republicanism.
