He also spent a ton of time promoting charter schools. I pointed out that 90% of Ward 3 is DCPS or private and we don’t have any charters in Ward 3. Told him again just not a compelling issue for Ward 3.

He claims he is really an independent and only ran Republican because the Republican Party refuses to stand down and not run somebody and endorse an independent. As a result, if he was independent he would split the vote with a republican.

I appreciate your viewpoint. However, his published platform mentioned funding police. Assuming if he saw the current situation he would move further than Frumin to address it. Charter schools are an important part of DC's public educational system. And there is (and historically has been) a Ward 3 cohort at Washington Latin. A number of Ward 3 students also go to Walls, which while not technically a charter is run like one.

Walls is absolutely not a charter. It is part of DCPS, like the other application schools, and is within that umbrella, with WTU teachers. It is not "run like a charter"

Look, I'm novice at the law. But aren't there times when there are suits over massive system failures, like title 9? The people of DC are being failed by systems. Not when you elect people to enact these policies. It would have to be something like denying voting rights to certain races. But in DC's case, voters and politicians believe the lack of criminal arrest and prosecution is a benefit to POC so there will be no investigation. States rights let you experiment but that just means outsiders will just point and laugh if the result is bad.

We all complain, rightly so, that Frumin and other Ward 3 council folks care too much about non-Ward 3 problems. Well, private school vouchers are not a Ward 3 problem...they might be good policy for the city as a whole, but I would be pissed off if everyone was allowed to use private school vouchers that simply subsidized kids already in private schools. In states where there are vouchers for everyone, 80% of the money goes to parents/kids already enrolled in private school. Also, don't think the private school won't raise tuition or lower their financial aid accordingly.

You are fixating on schooling when you are correct, the biggest issue facing ward 3 is crime. I think he would have done better than Frumin, but happy to elect any other candidate that actually address it as well - of ANY party including Republican.

Not really...was responding to a PP. One of the major problems Ward 3 has always had is our council member spends too much time worrying about Ward 3 problems.

Last thing I want is our Ward 3 council member taking their eye off the ball of crime to sponsor private school vouchers (which is what PP suggested). That's not a Ward 3 problem and it will also take away money that can be used towards...fighting crime.

Does a DCPS school actually have this authority though? To enact a discipline consequence (removal from the school) on a student based on their in-boundary or out-of-boundary status? If two kids get into a fight and one is in boundary and the other is out of boundary andthey are both at the same level of fault, does the in-boundary student get to stay but the out-of-boundary student can be sent back to their home school?

TBH I think DCPS needs to crack down on truancy and dropout rates, and if they get into fights or cause trouble when they are put back into the schools, institute reform schools for the habitual troublemakers.

Otherwise all they are doing is ruining their lives and setting themselves up for long term unemployability / underemployability, if not jail or getting shot by some other street idiot who they give too much attitude to - all of which is the path they are currently already on. It needs to end.

He claims he is really an independent and only ran Republican because the Republican Party refuses to stand down and not run somebody and endorse an independent. As a result, if he was independent he would split the vote with a republican.

Charter schools are an important part of DC's public educational system. And there is (and historically has been) a Ward 3 cohort at Washington Latin. A number of Ward 3 students also go to Walls, which while not technically a charter is run like one.

Walls isn't remotely run like a charter. You clearly don't have a kid there. Sure, the application screens out the riff-raff, and many Ward 3 parents treat it like a free private school (and then get angry when they realize...nope, it isn't)...but it doesn't operate anywhere close to say Basis.

In theory DC public schools are allowed to screen out the riff-raff too, through the ability to send discipline- and repeated truancy-problem students who live out of the boundary area back to their "home" (in boundary) schools. But DCPS seldom if ever exercises this authority, probably because they are afraid of the political blowback.

Does a DCPS school actually have this authority though? To enact a discipline consequence (removal from the school) on a student based on their in-boundary or out-of-boundary status? If two kids get into a fight and one is in boundary and the other is out of boundary andthey are both at the same level of fault, does the in-boundary student get to stay but the out-of-boundary student can be sent back to their home school?

It's difficult to expel a student from his/her 'by right' school. Out of boundary students attend their schools at the discretion of the school system. They can be sent back to their home school, but again, it is difficult to expel them from there.

Ward 3 residents voted for a guy who campaigned on making your quality of life worse. Sadly, he’s good at his job and delivering on his promise.

I voted for the Republican. I have to live with my neighbors choices, but hoping next time they'll consider alternatives to Bernie Sanders type representation.

His office won't answer when asked if he is voting for Pinto's bill as is. Guess that is the answer, eh? In person in CP he acted all enthused for the crowd. Re: her June Emergency bill he echoed a lot of the language of JLG, who voted against it. He seems weak and not super smart. If JLG loses to Gore, wonder who Matt will attach himself to for ideas and animating force?

Did anyone know him when he practiced law? He comes across as such a lightweight. Always with the head tilt.
