+1 You can also reduce the likelihood of that happening by using your right turn signal as you’re passing the last vehicle to let the people behind you know that you’re getting out of the way. |
And yet the actual speed limit on the beltway is 55. |
I know this is supposed to be a joke, but UK drivers are some of the best drivers in the world (I used to live there and also drove everyday). The main reason is their driver’s license test which is very hard to pass. I remember reading about a woman who took the test 35 times before she passed and got her driver’s license! |
It’s wrong. The biggest predictor for accidents is variance from the speed limit, not speeding. When you clog up lanes and force people to constantly break and change lanes, you cause more accidents. Get out of the way so the flow of traffic can actually flow. |
No way, it's not foreigners. It's lazy-ass American drivers who think they have the "right" to use a public asset however they want, regardless of the negative externalities they impose on other users. This is literally the American ethos of "can't take away muh freedom / tell me what to do." |
Because you’re driving in the left lane and are going slow. Have better self awareness around you and look in your rear view mirror. You can always see someone gaining on you. If they are, get out of the damn way. |
Here are the hall monitors. Stay right, pass left. |
This forum is about the DC area, where the bolded is not true. You almost never have clear open road here. Speeders who pass me will encounter someone new a few car lengths ahead: if that person weren't there I'd probably be going faster already. If we're talking about rural highway then sure, I agree with you. |
If you aren’t passing promptly then you better stay right. |
You're not real smart, are you? By camping in the left lane, you're actually keeping people frmo moving faster. |
Do you never drive outside of rush hour? Of course there are times when we don’t have bumper to bumper traffic. |
There's so much of this on I-95 right now near Fredericksburg where they are doing a ton of road work. Recently did the drive to/from OBX and everyone was merging waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too early. I drove in the impending "closure lane" for like 1.5 miles bypassing a ton of traffic and then zipper merged at the end. Easily shaved 30 minutes off our drive relative to sitting in the massive back-up of traffic. The issue is that the construction crews put up the lane closure signs 3-4 miles in advance and drivers start freaking out, getting out of the closure lane way too early. Just do the zipper merge, folks. |
I'm all for blaming Maryland when possible, but left lane camping is a Virginia custom. 100% |
| This thread is proof 60-70% of drivers on the road in this region shouldn’t have DLs. So many idiots with insane mindsets. They should fine anyone driving in the left lane $5000. |
Doesn’t matter. The obligation to yield to faster moving traffic is independent of the speed limit. Self-appointed speed limit enforcers in the left lane create dangerous conditions. |
