The parents are pretty entitled and can’t be bothered to read most emails, let alone sign things. There isn’t a punishment or even incentive for parents to step it up, but there are plenty of ways to get kids to take responsibility for their parents.

The teacher overreacted but is almost certainly reacting to whatever happened in the classroom last year- it’s a guess but I bet the parents were bad about signing things, helping with projects, signing up for conferences, etc.

I'm not entitled. I'd left my reading glasses at work, and I was having a ridiculously hard time reading the small print. I take full responsibility for forgetting the glasses and missing the signature. It's all my fault, not my kid's. But it didn't happen because I'm entitled.

Then why didn't you send the child a note to give to the teacher telling her this,? Only an idiot has one pair of reading glasses.

You can buy extras at the $ store for home, car, office, purse. Start using your head for something other than a hatrack!

My goodness, you're hateful. Go get some sun or something.

Maybe parents should teach children to behave in school and then they wouldn't lose recess. You email the principal and then you are one of those parents that the school hates.

Are you illiterate?

No. But. You are.

DP. I've got lots of reading glasses for different places. Most people do - that's why they sell them 2 or 4 at a time. "Couldn't find my reading glasses" is on par with "my dog ate it".

OP may have learned something from this. Her DC may have learned something from this. Maybe.

Maybe you should educate yourself on the benefits of physical activity and recess before spewing nonsense.

That used to happen when I went to school, now is just funny memoires.

Was thr signature related to activity for recess? Like you had to sign to have your kids use the equipment? If not, then this is completely unacceptable. You should make your concerns known but also keep a vigilant eye because this school doesn't seem to understand how to handle children appropriately.

My kid is also in private in moco. Her whole class lost recess once and I was livid. It was during Covid so the only time they could take masks off and have fresh air.
I emailed the Principal and copied the teacher that this was not ok. Principal was new but said he agreed but as it wasn’t explicitly in the handbook the teacher didn’t technically do anything wrong but it would be in the handbook going forward. I put in writing that if my child ever has any behavioral issues needing a consequence that I am to be notified and we will come up with something appropriate together. Losing the once chance at exercise/fresh air they get a day is not it.

I think there are some teenage trolls on here, deliberately writing inflammatory comments to rile people up.

ignore, OP.

and you're right to be upset. an 8 yr old shouldn't be punished because their parent missed a signature.
Anonymous
Is this school inflexible and overly punitive in other ways? The beauty of private school is that each school has a different approach to discipline and expectations and families should choose the school that works best for them. Personally, this incident would have me questioning if I want my child to stay at the school, unless the principal immediately responds with apologies to you and your child and a plan to provide the teacher more support.

OP, don't engage with this sock puppeting troll. They're just trying to stir the pot. Probably a bored middle schooler for whom camp has ended and school hasn't started. Instead, talk to the teacher and, if needed, the division head about the school's policy on taking away recess and how a missing signature fits in. See what they say and whether it makes any sense. I'm a school administrator (outside of the area) and it's hard to imagine justifying this, but maybe something is getting lost in translation.

Was it a permission slip for some recess activity?
Anonymous
Detention for that is crazy. Nip this in the bud and Email the teacher to ask about the detention policy and why you were not contacted.

By all means, complain and have recess reinstated for every student who does not follow instructions. Bring the bad behavior of public school students into your private school.

Do you read anything before making an irrelevant comment?

My son used to lose some of his recess because his learning disability slowed him down. He needed more time to finish the work.
