3rd grader punished because I forgot to sign paperwork

Anonymous
No recess for two days because I missed a single signature in a 20-page package of back to school information. Is this normal practice? I know elementary school isn't industry, but I can't imagine this happening in the real world.

I would be very concerned that losing recess is a punishment and asking a lot of follow up questions to the teacher and principal about why that's even on the table.

Also, a note home about the missing signature seems much more appropriate.

That is insane.

I would be livid. First of all, for all of the teachers on this site, STOP TAKING AWAY RECESS. Our kids need to have a break!!! Secondly, email the parent and do not punish the kid. I would definitely email the principal.

Public school? Recess is mandated by law, I'd complain to the regional superintendent

I would complain to the Principal about recess being taken away. That’s a huge no no for elem age kids.

Private.

Revoking recess as punishment is not OK, is counterproductive, and in some places, it is illegal.

Do you want well-behaved students in class or not? It sounds like you want your DC to be in a wild classroom with no discipline.

By all means, complain and have recess reinstated for every student who does not follow instructions. Bring the bad behavior of public school students into your private school.

Whatever you’re paying, it’s way too much.

Taking away recess is unacceptable unless your child has been beating up other kids at recess.

You are INSANE. Mom missed one signature line, has nothing to do with any school behavior of the child.

What bad behavior? Not returning a signed form? Taking away recess isn’t discipline, it’s the sign of a lazy, untrained teacher or a teacher who needs to retire. Private schools don’t have rigorous requirements for who they hire so it could be either.

Not saying teacher is in the right, but our k-8 not super exclusive private does similar because they realized the kids are the only ones who will take any kinds of mandates seriously. The parents are pretty entitled and can’t be bothered to read most emails, let alone sign things. There isn’t a punishment or even incentive for parents to step it up, but there are plenty of ways to get kids to take responsibility for their parents.

The teacher overreacted but is almost certainly reacting to whatever happened in the classroom last year- it’s a guess but I bet the parents were bad about signing things, helping with projects, signing up for conferences, etc.

He didn't do anything, though.

Are you a teacher? If so, please resign ASAP. Your schooling and any instruction on classroom management has failed you. Kids need a break, even the badly behaved ones. Taking away recess from kids who are fidgety and need to get some energy out is super counterproductive. It will only assure they misbehave for the rest of the day.
