Americans moving to Japan for safety and affordability

not true. Random shootings at malls, churches, schools.. Sandy Hook ES is in a nice CT town.

I read another article like this, except it was a man who moved to Spain with his family.

Basically same story: it was about safety. They had been visiting Spain from MO, sitting in an outdoor cafe, and not once did they think about a mass shooter. He said in MO, mass shooter thoughts go through his head whenever he's at a large gathering. His wife is a school teacher, and they did not want their kids to grow up doing lockdown drills for shooters.

And I totally agree. We went to the UK last year, and not once did we think about mass shootings; whereas, when I now go to the mall, movies, even church here, I think about "what would I do if a mass shooter came right now". What a difference.

I sit outdoors at cafes all the time and never worry about mass shooters. Your neuroses are going to follow you regardless of where you go.

I bet all those people who died in random mass shootings also never thought about mass shootings.

This. I travel to Japan frequently for work. There are very few Americans there. If you are not Japanese, it is nearly impossible to get a work permit. And, there is great disdain for non-Japanese. It is a very closed society.

Of those 57,000, I guarantee the vast majority of them are there for work, doing research, etc. You can't just pick up and move to Japan.

Then don't think about potential shootings. The overwhelming majority of Americans will never be anywhere near a shooting

but it still happens regularly, way too often, and it's random. Why do American adults think it's fine that kids have to practice shooter drills in school? That's so sad.

It's fascinating to me that the same statistics that are held up to call us hysterical when we worry about mass shootings somehow don't apply to the arguments allowing people to buy any type of firearm they want and to carry it wherever and whenever they want - the reason we have concealed carry and now open carry is because of mass shootings like the Luby's in Texas back in the '80's. The argument for allowing concealed carry was that being able to protect yourself in the event of a shooting would reduce the number of shootings. But if you are statistically unlikely to be the victim of a mass shooting, you need the ability to carry a gun everywhere at all times why...?

That is racist.

US wins this category by a huge margin.

Almost all of those 60,000 people have either parents, grandparents, or a spouse who was born in Japan as a Japanese national. I believe Japan has a process for obtaining resident status if you fall into one of those categories. Otherwise, it's extremely hard to move there.

You might want to research knife attacks in Japan, Asia, Europe, etc.

In short: it’s the weapon of choice since guns aren’t readily available.

I lived in Tokyo for a number of years. As someone pointed out up-thread, it is a xenophobic nation. I know a number of close friends who have made it their home. But you never are fully assimilated.

It is safe. If you show up and start dealing drugs the cops will be on to you within a day. The cops come by your house every year to say ‘hi’ and verify who you are and you still live there. Every neighborhood as a “police box” that is manned by a couple of officers. The police force is a national police force so you dont have the tens of thousands of police forces we have. They generally have their act together and solve crimes. Their conviction rate is above 90%. You do not want to have anything to do with their criminal justice system. All foreigners have to register and be fingerprinted. You are issued a foreign registration card and are supposed to carry it with you.

Healthcare access is good but one of the reasons the cancer rate is so low is, docs over there don’t want to tell you that you have cancer, so it goes underreported.

Have you spent a meaningful amount of time in Japan and left the big cities? If so, you understand the context of this person's post. It was uncomfortable enough to be Caucasian living in Japan.

that's another thing... I hate the gun culture in the US. It's a circular reasoning... we have more and more guns because of mass shootings; we have more mass shootings because we have more and more easy access to guns.

The percentage of firearms misused in so-called “mass” shootings (or indeed any unlawful shooting at all) is infinitesimal.

gun deaths in the US FAAAAAAAAAR surpass gun deaths in Japan, and most of the world, even some 3rd world countries, and that includes mass shootings.

Not sure why you think it's fine for your kids to have to practice shooter drills. Or maybe you don't have kids, so you don't care.

There is no place in the world except maybe South Korea for safety, public transportation and food. We absolutely dream of moving to Japan. There are many, many other beautiful towns and cities besides Tokyo. Housing in Japan is very affordable. Everything is cheap in Japan for an American, but if you earn Japanese money it isn't cheap because their incomes are very low. You must learn Japanese, which is hella difficult, if you want a chance at having any job besides a lowly paid English teacher.

There is xenophobia and yes, you will never be Japanese no matter how hard you try to integrate. Those are small tradeoffs though to find asylum from illegal immigration, gun violence, crime, ridiculous health care and all of the other cancers plaguing the US.

Isn’t groping a thing in Japan. I know for a fact that Japanese men have some pretty messed up views on women.
