This is so unbelievably offensive.

Yes - when I read that, I was thinking wtf?! - our amazing hospitals are the same as ethnic genocide?

Well, to be fair, its probably the homogeny of their people that allows their culture.

People hate on the US but we’re one of the few truly diverse countries on the planet. There are lots of inherrent challenges that go along with that.

But of course gun crime has nothing to do with diversity. Australia is more diverse and doesn’t have a gun crime problem like the US.

Australia is 77% and 10% Asian. I wouldn't call that more diverse.

Fine. Canada is far more divorce than the US and doesn't have a gun crime problem like the US.

This thread is about Japan. However, Canada is 70% White, the US is 58% White.

not true. Random shootings at malls, churches, schools.. Sandy Hook ES is in a nice CT town.

I read another article like this, except it was a man who moved to Spain with his family.

Basically same story: it was about safety. They had been visiting Spain from MO, sitting in an outdoor cafe, and not once did they think about a mass shooter. He said in MO, mass shooter thoughts go through his head whenever he's at a large gathering. His wife is a school teacher, and they did not want their kids to grow up doing lockdown drills for shooters.

And I totally agree. We went to the UK last year, and not once did we think about mass shootings; whereas, when I now go to the mall, movies, even church here, I think about "what would I do if a mass shooter came right now". What a difference.

I sit outdoors at cafes all the time and never worry about mass shooters. Your neuroses are going to follow you regardless of where you go.

I bet all those people who died in random mass shootings also never thought about mass shootings.

Thinking about it wouldn't have saved them. And it won't save you.

There is a lot more fights and general social corrosive behavior in Australia than in Japan

I’m poc and Japan is xenophobic sure but it’s so safe and clean and chill as I mentioned in another sub forum on here as long as you don’t want to “become Japanese” or have local friends it’s way better to live than anywhere else really.

Australia is really very rednecky even in the cities

Yes, who wants local friends!?

Why do you think it's so safe?

It’s safe because there is equality/equity. They never forced a bunch of people into their country to become slaves. They never stole their land from other people. They are a more egalitarian society. That’s why it’s safer.

Yes. World War II, and “Comfort Women” never happened

Korea would like a word.

Japan is way, way too conservative for most Americans. The people who say things like "they are safer and take better care of their people" would probably not tolerate living in an actual society like Japan.

Ha ha ha. Search Korean comfort women.

Yes, I know about the WWII history. The point is they don’t CURRENTLY have slave descendants that are relegated to segregated inner cities, with poor schools, and few opportunities for advancement. Way to miss the point.

Young school girls are not very safe on Tokyo subways.

What does that say about attitudes there??

https://tankenjapan.com/how-common-is-chikan-unwanted-touching-on-trains-in-japan/

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-01-07/women-subjected-to-daily-trauma-on-tokyo-subway-gropers/8166672

There are even bars there where you can go, set up like a subway train, to carry out this crime. And the government allows it.

The proximity to China and Japans aging population and low birth rate would make me nervous. Of necessity they are going to have to open their society up to more poor emigres. I see future culture clashes that may affect the treatment of non Japanese.

They won't. The Japanese aren't going down the ponzi scheme of mass low wage migration. Their population is aging and declining but will reach a new sustainable and manageable plateau. The Japanese are being smart about short term pain for long term gains.

Japan is very homogenous and culturally strong. They have no interest in diversity and most likely see diversity as undermining their culture, and they have some justification for thinking this if they watch Europe and places like Sweden and France.

Moving the goal posts to win your argument already? There aren't many descendants because the confort women had curiously high rates of sterility. You might wonder what happened to children that were born to these women. I am sure the fathers stepped up.

I think it would be a pleasant change from the crime and mass shootings here. Their frequent earthquakes would give me pause, however.
