Short Waitlists is up

I don’t think folks should overlook the stress involved with a child having to switch schools twice in two years: first to 5th grade at a new elementary school where many kids have known each other awhile, and then to a middle school at 6th grade, where kids from 5th may or may not also go. It’s particularly hard if you’re switching to a 5th and 6th grade not close to where you live and have to make much more of an effort and figure out new commutes. But alas, families have to jump through hoops to find acceptable middle and high school pathways…

TR 4th and young having zero kids on the 5th grade waitlist is no good.

1) if you’re waiting until you’ve got a rising 5th grader to figure out middle school, you’re actually fine. I see two solid middle school feeder options on this list for 5th grade (Mondo Verde -> DCI and Thompson -> SWW@FS). So those loving their IB elementary school but not their middle school feed can breathe a bit easier. Even with a crap lotto number, you can make it work.

2) if you’re in a middle school you love with a bad feeder and are waiting to figure out 9th, that’s a bit rockier. Eastern or Roosevelt are probably your best lotto options if you don’t get into an application school and get a crap number. Even Soujourner Truth and Washington Leadership Academy didn’t make this list.

5th grade at MV would be awfully hard for a kid that didn’t speak Spanish.

Also, I don’t think if SWW@FS as an upgrade from SH (do most?) and kids can walk right into an SH feeder easily.

There are many, many families that either speak Spanish at home or are in DCPS immersion schools that could switch to MV without a hitch.

I’m looking at the list and they have 9 people on the waitlist for 5th. There are no spots and there are a hell of a lot of bilingual DCPS families looking for middle school feed.

No idea where PP says there are spots. Also no spots whatsoever the rest of the grades at either campuses.

I would also add plenty of seats at schools below

Bunker hill
Burroughs
Cleveland
Langdon
Langley
Miner
Seaton
Tyler
Whittier

Most of the DCPS Spanish bilingual schools 2nd grade and up

The information on the website is incorrect. DC is #5 on the waitlist for Tyler Dual Language for PK3. The list says there are 0 on the waitlist. So unless they cleared the waitlist today and haven't updated the myschooldc website, the Short Waitilist info is wrong.

We switched our kids at 2nd and 4th. It was harder for our daughter in 4th as girls tend to have already build their relationships with their peers. Our son, cried for a few days but it was easier for him to establish a friend group.

Speaking Spanish at home is not sufficient to allow your kid in thrive in a truly bilingual environment. I def don’t think MV is truly bilingual, but how do you expect your 5th grader to learn math if every other day is in Spanish? Huge mistake.

Also Stuart Hobson is a huge mistake for someone who is seeking academic rigor. If you prioritize a short commute over academic rigor it makes sense.

Oh please... if they speak spanish at home - Im sure they are much better off than a lot of the MV kids. Anyway this is basically for kids that are in DCPS immersion schools. They could switch to MV in 5th.

I hope this is helpful to people still looking for options!

Of note:
1st at Barnard
1st English Dominant at Bruce-Monroe
5th at Cap City
All grades at Capital Village
PK3 at Cleveland- English-only
1st at Cleveland English Dominant
5th at CMI
PK4 at Stokes EE French
PK3-1st at Houston, English Dominant
K at Hyde-Addison
K and up at Langdon Montessori
Lots of space at LaSalle-Backus including preschool
PK3 at Lee EE
5th at Mundo-P St-- getcher DCI preference here!
K at Powell English Dominant, 2nd, 4th and 5th as well
K and up at Seaton (except 4th)
5th and 6th at SSMA
5th-8th at Social Justice
PK4 at Stevens ELC (zero on the waitlist!)
Everything except PK3 at Thomson
5th at TR4 and TRY
PK3 and PK4 at Tyler English-only
Tons of space at Walker-Jones including ECE
10th, 11th, and 12th at Washington Leadership Academy
PK3 at Wheatley
K and 2nd at Whittier

Doesn't the Tyler PK3 have to be a mistake? Didn't they go to immersion only for PK3 this year?

Yeah it must be zero because there were no seats at all in the first place for PreK3 and Prek4 non spanish immersion. They still had to have it because the upper grades still have non spanish immersion. The DL English Dominant has a short waitlist in 3rd and 5th and the Spanish dominant has a short waitlist in PK3, PK4, K, 1st.

If you prioritize academic rigor, you wouldn’t be sending your child to a DC public school in the first place.

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. MV has the strongest Spanish program.

We know a native speaking family whose kid switched from Marie Reed to MV in 2nd and was behind in Spanish and spent the year catching up.

Can you please not do this? Can you please note ruin another data thread with some inane and condescending back and forth with hardened opinions on things for which there aren't actually yes/no answers?

Anonymous wrote:Friendship Chamberlain no waitlist for PK3-1st. Surprises me for ECE; pretty decent location for Hill/just across the the river folks commuting in.

JOW basically no WL for K-2.

Also, I am confused by why Watkins doesn't appear on the list, because they initially didn't even fill their seats. Can they pull them back if that happens with a plan to downsize?

I don't know about Watkins, could be.

JOW likely due to the renovation?

Friendship Chamberlain is a great PK option, I encourage anyone without a solid plan to check it out.

Yeah, JOW picked an unfortunate time to be just pre-construction. I think interest there is going to skyrocket post-construction, but they're really going to have to do some rebuilding first. They're going to end up with a ton of empty seats.

When would have been a good time? The point (made by others) is that families in K-2 will likely never get the benefit of the reno and will have to deal with swing space, so why go? That would have been the case regardless of when they did the reno.

I think they were otherwise well positioned to benefit in the short term from the collapse of 2R.

If you think TR's decline is a recent event you haven't been paying attention.

I am at a neighboring school and this year seems to be by the biggest effect yet.

Your impressions are not "facts". The number of kids fleeing TR schools and the falling demand is not new this year. The world was round before you noticed it, too.

It’s very obvious that it’s a person with a kid in a DCPS school that loses a lot of kids in K or 1st who is desperate to keep families at the school.

This data is just a snapshot. Many more grades and schools will be added to the list from now until October. You can use the historic waitlist data to get a sense of which schools go far into and clear waitlists regularly.

This year's TRY 5th grade had no permanent lead teachers for more than half of the year. One of teachers left midyear without another job.

Many of us (now former) TRY parents spoke out years ago about the systemic problems at the school and with leadership; we received little support from other parents who inexplicably continued to drink the kool-aid and marketing push by the school. The collapse of the school is of little surprise.
