JOW basically no WL for K-2.

Also, I am confused by why Watkins doesn't appear on the list, because they initially didn't even fill their seats. Can they pull them back if that happens with a plan to downsize?

I don't know about Watkins, could be.

JOW likely due to the renovation?

Friendship Chamberlain is a great PK option, I encourage anyone without a solid plan to check it out.

Yeah, JOW picked an unfortunate time to be just pre-construction. I think interest there is going to skyrocket post-construction, but they're really going to have to do some rebuilding first. They're going to end up with a ton of empty seats.

When would have been a good time? The point (made by others) is that families in K-2 will likely never get the benefit of the reno and will have to deal with swing space, so why go? That would have been the case regardless of when they did the reno.

Huh? How long do you expect it to take that a student in K would never benefit?

I think they were otherwise well positioned to benefit in the short term from the collapse of 2R.

My understanding is the reno won't start until (at least) 24-25. If it takes 2 years to complete (which I think is standard) they won't be back in the building until 4th grade. If they are hoping for Latin/BASIS in 5th that's 1 year in new building in exchange for a year in the old space + 2 in swing space. Even if there for 4th and 5th, that's not a trade-off I'd make.

If you think TR's decline is a recent event you haven't been paying attention.

My takeaways (from an EOTP and staying there perspective):

1) if you’re waiting until you’ve got a rising 5th grader to figure out middle school, you’re actually fine. I see two solid middle school feeder options on this list for 5th grade (Mondo Verde -> DCI and Thompson -> SWW@FS). So those loving their IB elementary school but not their middle school feed can breathe a bit easier. Even with a crap lotto number, you can make it work.

2) if you’re in a middle school you love with a bad feeder and are waiting to figure out 9th, that’s a bit rockier. Eastern or Roosevelt are probably your best lotto options if you don’t get into an application school and get a crap number. Even Soujourner Truth and Washington Leadership Academy didn’t make this list.

I am at a neighboring school and this year seems to be by the biggest effect yet.

5th grade at MV would be awfully hard for a kid that didn’t speak Spanish.

Also, I don’t think if SWW@FS as an upgrade from SH (do most?) and kids can walk right into an SH feeder easily.

Me again. So you’re right - Ludlow-Taylor and JO Wilson which are both on this list feed to Stuart-Hobson. Which just proves my point even more strongly. There are decent middle school feeders available if you wait till 5th. You can chill at any one of a number of good elementary schools through 4th grade that feed into middle schools you’re not comfortable with and you’re still basically guaranteed to land somewhere workable for middle school. For parents at Garrison, Marie Reed, good elementary charters without a middle school, Brent, etc, etc, there’s some real peace of mind here.

There are many, many families that either speak Spanish at home or are in DCPS immersion schools that could switch to MV without a hitch.

Your definition of good is not my definition of good. SH is not a good option in our book.

But you do you.

L-T may not get through 7 5th grade slots this year because they cut from 3 to 2 classrooms. JOW has no WL though and Watkins has empty slots per the other spreadsheet.

That said, I think SH is still very much the edge case of whether people a think it’s acceptable enough to feel comfortable.

Speaking Spanish at home is not sufficient to allow your kid in thrive in a truly bilingual environment. I def don’t think MV is truly bilingual, but how do you expect your 5th grader to learn math if every other day is in Spanish? Huge mistake.

Also Stuart Hobson is a huge mistake for someone who is seeking academic rigor. If you prioritize a short commute over academic rigor it makes sense.

It’s a really great option for families who just want a placeholder for middle school and engage in magical thinking about finding a good high school.
