What colleges are the rest of TJ students (not in the top 20%) going?

I think the middle of the road kids get shut out at UVA and VA Tech and go to OOS schools - Purdue, UIUC, Michigan etc

UIUC and Michigan are pretty hard to get into. So, it would surprise me if the middling 50%< got into UIUC or Mich.

So you are saying VT only had 7 because they largely didn't admit TJ students?

Yes, VT for some reason doesn't take a lot of TJ kids.

Because VT took 49 - that is a high number!

This is a big change from a generation ago. I'm a late-90s TJ grad and my memory is that about 100 people went to UVA, a quarter of the class. Another huge chunk went to VT too. I wonder when the UVa numbers dropped?

Probably when the rest of VA started complaining!

UVA was 49. VT was 7.

A much higher percentage of TJ students now go OOS.

I mean, for some yes, but for many, no.

UVA is historically attracted to well-rounded students. Those were in greater supply in earlier years at TJ and are in significantly shorter supply now. But the ones who deserve to get in generally do.

Most TJ students are not interested in attending UVA especially since they have weak CS/Engineering programs. Only those who cannot afford privates or OOS tuition may end up attending UVA reluctantly unless you are in the bottom 20% in which case those students will be glad to attend.

How many TJ students went to UVA last year again?

Both ends of this statement are completely false. Like, "rock-solid evidence you have no idea what you're talking about" false.

HYPSM: 30-35 (7-8%)
Caltech + rest of ivies: 25-30 (6-7%)
UChicago, NW, UCB, Duke, JHU: 25-30 (6-7%)
Those are approximately the top 20%.

The next tier went to CMU (10-15), UMich (10-15), UVA (~50), NYU (~10), etc.

This number gets dropped significantly this year.

Certainly they are going OOS by choice in the sense that they could certainly be admitted somewhere in state (although perhaps not where they want to go), but choose out of state. I think what has happened is that as TJ has become better known it is recruited more by OOS colleges and kids get more offers that are attractive compared to in-state options. From a prior post, you can see that the numbers going to all the public schools have been declining.

Let's wait to see some real data, at least some self-reported data like this. Not gonna trust some rumor on DCUM.

And UVA is the only game in town (state) and it is rejecting many more TJ students sending them reluctantly out of state and there are no other factors in play?

Not true. UVA is a safety for most TJ students except for the bottom 1/3.
