+1. I’m a child of immigrants (and lifelong Democratic voter), and I see no problem with this bill. Many countries, including Western democracies, require a language test as part of the naturalization process. Immigrants shouldn’t have to sacrifice their own language and culture, but requiring English proficiency is good for everyone.

Which other Western countries are famous melting pots? I wish that immigrants who came here could have English proficiency, more for their own success here than for “efficiency,” but the fact is that lots of those other Western democracies that require language tests also provide language classes. Norway does, for example.

Actually, I think English as a national language fits in perfectly with the melting pot. You (an immigrant) come here and leave your mark on American culture, and it leaves its mark on you. Some degree of assimilation is required if you're going to "melt" in, and speaking English is a pretty basic place to start. And like you said, it contributes to their own success as well as general efficiency. [b]I'm fine with a policy of subsidizing or providing free English classes in conjunction with a bill like this.[/b][/quote]

+1 I would love to get a federal job teaching English. Please hire me so I can help in Vance's efforts to contribute to our country.
