Duke weather and campus are far prettier and more enjoyable. Cornell has the college town right there which is nice, but with winter basically from November into April, you have three months (Sept/Oct/May) to enjoy. At Duke you have 6-8 weeks of winter and that's it.
Tomorrow, Ithaca has a chance of snow and a wind chill of 15 degrees, while Durham will be 65 and sunny. Does Cornell have an edge in CS? Yes it does, but but you have to want the edge over the quality of life. Both are great schools, just visit again and select and move on. |
Compared to Cornell? Cornell has its merits, but weather is not one of them. |
| It depends on the kid. For a good well rounded undergrad experience I would suggest duke. The prestige the faculty the resources are far better than at Cornell. But if your kid is a CS geek etc maybe Cornell. For me it would be Duke no question |
| Why spend all that money on a program that’s no better that your state flagship’s? |
|
For CS, Cornell. Internationally Cornell has much better overall reputation as well. |
Duke and Cornell are equal in prestige. In fact, I would give Cornell the edge in prestige |
Duke campus felt like a Hogwarts placed in Disneyland. |
| Durham is a dump. A seriously depressing/depressed place. I would take a long hard look at The surrounding area before opting for Duke. Campus is beautiful, but it’s a bubble, and the moment you step out of the campus bubble, you’re in a pretty unappealing place. |
Actually no, I was being mean. it is a beautiful campus. The garden is out of the world. It just felt a bit disjointed with the East and West campus so separate. |
Weather better, yes. But c'mon campus? Cornell is so very beautiful. We found the Duke campus to be a bit artificial and the freshmen dorms so far away strange. |
What are your thoughts on a good fit b/w Cornell and Duke CS for a student who is studious, has the stats to try for both, likes socializing but not partying, watches sports, BUT is not a particularly aggressive person and prefers to avoid confrontation. Duke is an easier location and the sports sounds great but most of the kids who have chosen Duke from our school in the past have been (I wont say mean) but brash and swaggerish. |
| My son was making a decision between UPenn, Duke, Cornell, CMU, and a few others for CS last year. Chose Duke for the intangibles and having a great experience. The CS isn’t as rigorous but there are plenty of ways for your child to find challenges by opting for higher level classes early on (Duke hs lots of curriculum flexibility). My DS says many of his peers are extremely smart and driven too so there won’t be a lack of exposure to interesting ideas and projects just by making friends on campus. Best advice is to visit both and see which one feels like the better fit. |
“The CS isn’t as rigorous….” Once again, why is Duke considered a top ten school? |
DP. Which ranking? And what was their methodology/weighting? Endowment? Class size? There are likely other factors beyond "rigor". |
|
Definitely Duke.
Too many rich aggressive New York kids at Cornell. |
