The secondary fight outside the gate occurred when NW fans were leaving and started things up again.

Germantown is the Baltimore of Montgomery County. We've put in place elected officials who are dragging this County down instead of up. Crime is through the roof and no one doing anything about it. Germantown specifically is full of drugs and thugs.

And football culture is brutal.

Poor people have to live somewhere. Where are they going to go? There is a trailer park in Germantown. FYI.

It's a result of housing segregation... The county politics and NIMBYism is concentrating poverty and related issues based on family income.

Yes, this isn't anything they couldn't easily fix with diversity busing.

It's ironic that mcps announces their "RISE" values bs at football games but doesn't actually do anything to implement the program. Players are allowed to trash talk and foul each other in every sport and the refs turn a blind eye.

If mcps wants to get serious about having a culture of respect in athletics they should give refs incentives for making sure the trash talk stops the first time. I guarantee that fight didn't just break out for no reason. The players were probably antagonizing each other verbally with physical fouls all game. They should make sure anyone caught in unsportsmanlike behavior is benched the next game and the whole season if it's serious enough. Watch if anyone in that fight is out more than 1 game. I doubt it.
I've also been at football games where the parents are trash talking players. Those parents should be ejected and banned no questions asked. Student sections are out of control throwing things and screaming obscenities. It's a perfect atmosphere for brawls which is why the police are there.

No, this happens at soccer games also.

Links to local high schools? I haven’t heard of any soccer issues. It seems to be 95% football related

I used to live in Germantown by the Town Center and it declined rapidly when housing vouchers became available. So many people moved up from down county and the city. I started finding drug paraphernalia all around the tot lot near my house. There were prostitutes loitering around the library. It's a shame because I do think there's a need for affordable housing. At the same time, there also needs to be some level of taking pride in your new community.

+1 MCPS just send out an email "We are All Winners When We Show Respect at MCPS Athletic Events" crap . This is like RJ BS.

So, what will happen to these teams? Not much, probably.

sure there will be at least two suspensions at GHS. I do not have insight to NW, but that asst coach should be fired.

Arrests were made but those were not students

Both football programs have been temporarily suspended while MCPS investigates.

An email was issued jointly from both principals

Part of the email:

“ We, the principals of our two schools, write to you today about the extremely disturbing events at the football game held at Gaithersburg High School last Friday evening. Late in the game, a fight broke out between two players, which then transitioned to other players and coaches becoming involved. Once the incident was resolved, the officials decided to disqualify both teams, resulting in a double-forfeiture of the game. After safely getting both teams out of the stadium, a number of individuals, including a few students, fought in the parking lot, and were subsequently arrested as they refused police orders to disperse, and in some cases, physically struggled with police. This was a dangerous situation and we will work with our central office partners to swiftly develop plans to enhance safety and ensure order at future school athletic events.

We wish to be very clear that together we strongly condemn this unacceptable behavior that occurred at the football game. This disrespectful and dangerous behavior is not what we model and communicate to our students and must not be tolerated. Fighting, and causing physical and emotional injury, is in no way an appropriate way to solve conflict. We ask all those involved or who witnessed this event to consider what could have happened had our police partners, security personnel and school staff not acted so quickly to deescalate this incident. Following a thorough investigation, disciplinary actions against any individuals (students or adults) who are found to have participated in these actions will be issued. As agreed upon by both MCPS and our respective schools, to assist in the ongoing investigations, all football operations at both schools will be suspended temporarily.”

Remove athletics from these two schools. Instead start Math and English camps.

Sports is a way for mostly hoodlums who happen to be students to waste school resources. If they don't want to study, throw them out of school. If they are illegal immigrants send the to FL.

Bravo! Way to stoke those cultural wars!

Don’t blame the refs. The refs need MCPS to support them. Heck, MCPS allows students to basically abuse teachers IN the classroom. Students, athletes and coaches are allowed to get away with terrible behavior.

This isn’t something the refs can fix on their own. MCPS needs to come down hard to unsportsmanlike behavior. Agree, ejected and banned, no questions asked.

It’s not just Germantown. Plenty of other areas in this county have gone downhill. Changing demographics, single-party politics. This county is an unappealing mess.
