Baltimore: Is it safe to walk to the Edgar Allan Poe house and museum from the Inner Harbor?

Someone tried to hit your car? What does that even mean?

The state of Baltimore is sad. I used to enjoy visiting the city, but haven’t been in over five years. It’s always had it’s bad parts, but it sounds like nowhere is safe in Baltimore.

As for the Pie house. I was there about twenty years ago. Pretty rough neighborhood, but back then Baltimore Police had a car assigned to park in front of the museum during operating hours.

tbh even walking from the parking garage to the Baltimore aquarium on a weekend morning could be sketchy as hell 7 years ago before the protests happened and things started going even more downhill. Sunday 10am I had a homeless insane veteran (well he was wearing camouflage) following my family three blocks from our brunch spot to the aquarium asking a bunch of questions about my kids - how old are they, where do they go to school, what are their hobbies. Never went back to Baltimore again

There was a shooting in the Inner Harbor a couple weeks back. It was an early weekend evening at one of the little outdoor amphitheaters. Lots of people out and about trying to enjoy the evening, then the shooting begins…scary and sad.

There is/was a lot to see and do in Baltimore. I used to really enjoy the city. That said, don’t think I will be going there anytime soon.

Anyone been to the Poe house recently?

It is safe to walk there. There is also plenty of free parking. I actually live in Baltimore, unlike the others weighing in.

How is the neighborhood around the house? Is there parking nearby?

I believe the only two restaurants/shops left in the buildings right on harbor are cheesecake factory and hooters.

I believe every other shop has closed, mall on other side of Pratt has closed and most of the restaurants on Pratt have closed.

Even Harbor East has its issues.

+1
I won't take my kids to the aquarium any more. The window washers at stoplights and the aggressive panhandling at intersections left me shaken on our most recent visit.

I was just at the inner harbor yesterday. Even a block north was pretty seedy with what appeared to be junkies begging at every corner. I would not do it.

I did see one window washer, but he didn't approach me. When I lived in NYC we just turned on our wipers and they knew they wouldn't get a tip and moved along.

Agree. It’s unfortunate.

My DH naively once went walking around the Poe house when he was working at Hopkins several years ago, and said he was never more glad to be out of a place.

In the 90's I lived in Federal Hill and would walk to work every day, up Charles St. I can't believe those Harborplace buildings are empty - what prime real estate! Nothing nicer than sitting outside on beautiful day having lunch or a drink after work. Where do you people go when there's a ball game?

The Rusty Scupper is still there though?

Is downtown Baltimore going to become what it used to be? That would be so sad.

The Harborplace buildings are empty because they are going to be redeveloped. They were bought by a national commercial real estate company maybe 10 years ago who went bankrupt and basically stopped caring for the properties and most tenants left for that reason. They were resold to a local developer this month.
