Baltimore: Is it safe to walk to the Edgar Allan Poe house and museum from the Inner Harbor?

Anonymous
Curious…for those who live or work in Baltimore. How would you compare the safety of JHU with university of Chicago? I remember going to admitted students day at JHU in the 80s and there was kind of a split of opinion among students about how safe it was to walk around and venture off campus. My own kid is looking at schools now and I’m having trouble assessing the safety/risk of JHU.

We used to go to Baltimore monthly or so for games, museums, etc.—-but that was 10-15 years ago, although we still went at least a few times a year up until probably 5 years ago.

Poe, if alive, would be aghast that his house was in such a nightmarish neighborhood where so many people meet an untimely demise.

Homewood campus? When I went, no one dared to go off campus.

The area around Hopkins undergrad is safe — I think UChicago is in a worse area. Baltimore’s crime remains very much centered in its poorest neighborhoods, as long has been the case.

There are many downtown neighborhoods that are quite nice and popular —Harbor East, Canton, Federal Hill, Fell’s Point, and Locust Point. In the midtown area, there is Hampden, Remington, and Station North. The inner Harbor is just not a big attraction anymore with the buildings empty— people just hang out in different parts of the city these days but I would say the restaurant/going out scene in the city is better than it was 10 years ago. I am looking forward to the redevelopment of Harbor Place, going to be interesting to see its next iteration.

Then you didn’t actually go there, as that has never been the case. Until a decade ago, all students other than freshman lived off campus. Now, there is sophomore housing on campus, but most upper classmen still live in Charles Village.

I spent 8 years at uofc and 5 at jhu. I spent a lot of time in the neighborhoods near both. Homewood always felt very safe to me. Uofc was fine but more big city and more areas as you got away from campus where you might find yourself completely alone, which I don't like. Overall, I love Baltimore and think it is a beautiful city but it's the most dysfunctional place I've ever lived in part because the ratio of dysfunction to function is worse than other places.

Stfu.

Why would I make this up? 2002 grad. Yeah, Charles village is technically not on the campus, but it is literally two streets over by St. Paul. I am not talking about Charles village you dolt…I mean avoiding the rest of Baltimore.

Ps…you don’t know what you are talking about. When I went, ALL sophomores lived in wolman or mccoy, which is on campus houses. Only upperclassmen had the option for apt living.

God, I effing hated that school, and now everyone can see why. People like you.

Ps…I was a sophomore in 99 to 2000. Again, no students in my class were off campus at that time. You have memory issues.

We still laugh about our trip to the Poe Museum. We -- four white women -- had just come from the farmer's market and were walking in the general direction of the museum.

As we got into the area that was clearly public housing, a black man called out to us: "You going to the Poe House?"

We heard it as "You going to the Poor House?"

Thankfully, he was a very kind person who gave us specific directions and ignored our obvious fluster.

Interesting place! But I'm still haunted by the after-death photos and that teeny tiny staircase into the attic where he wrote.

I live in Baltimore (and I'm still alive to type this post after 25 years here!), my husband works across from the street from Inner Harbor and my office is in an area that few tourists have any reason to ever visit. I've never been hurt but yes, I'm careful and know where I'm going. Not sure what the cost of your husband's car has to do with this discussion at all.

Such bs from a Baltimore resident, you know damn well he is for one point zero for the squeeze boy crap (make sure your husband has plenty of dollar bills in the car to the pay tole). I just left Baltimore and sold my house to someone who took a huge 500,000+ loss on their penthouse condo located at the Inner Harbor and he was a Doctor who no longer wanted his family living anywhere in that area even though he has to work there, Baltimore is in serious trouble and its' posters like you who give the dirty politicians there the power they wield to fool people into thinking they actually care. Yes Op, you should be worried and your husband needs to prepare himself because it is a crap shoot what any day will be like ... signed, a former Baltimorean. (sadly, I miss so much about Baltimore, just could not handle it as my family grew)

Lol, no they are not! What a load of crock, ie. the doctor shot after parking his car but he was lucky his friends were waiting in the ER to save his life! If it were safe it the slightest way, Hopkins would not be lobbying to put their own police force in place. Baltimore, including the neighborhoods you mentioned, ie. the mother pistol whipped in broad daylight while walking her infant just for shits and giggles by three black teenagers, are not any safe. Your post is very misleading. My dentist has a long time office in Canton and is now closing the location and moving to a location in Washington/ Popular Hill in NW Baltimore because they have lost so many clients do the crime and threat of crime it's not feasible to stay in business any longer. Your post is very misleading Mayor Scott.

Yeah, I don’t think that’s what they’ll think.

Shooting down someone’s opinion as totally invalid, quite rudely, and then being wrong on top of it? I beg to differ. Done.
