| What are her reaches? Easiest to use those to extrapolate safeties/matches incl ones that give merit. For example, Case Weatern might be a good fit match if her goal college is Wash U or Tufts, and they give a lot of merit if you show real interest. No brainer than instate W&M would be a good match and UVA if she applies ED (which obviously would make it her first choice). |
I haven't heard of some of these schools before, but thank you! |
NP here. We visited Case Western a few weeks ago and came back disappointed. The college has a serious security problem. Lots of campus security cars patrolling all day, and the adjoining neighborhoods are not safe. I would not feel comfortable sending my kids there. |
| W&M just seems miserable. Why not shoot for U of Richmond if you want a school in Virginia of that size and selectivity? I know, I know, it's private, and private means more expensive, but they have a stupid, retarded high endowment and use it to hand out aid and scholarships like candy. It's such a better environment, with funner kids and stronger on-campus recruiting. Check it out! |
Dartmouth, Brown and Northwestern. FA was good at all 3 (40-45k efc). FA was best at Wesleyan. Vassar was about 47k. All beat the net price calculator for us. |
Williams, Amherst and Strathmore are reaches for everyone. As are Pomona/Claremont |
Ugh, “funner” and “stupid retarded,” really? Is this meant to be satire? |
Sounds a lot like my DD, though we can afford it and feel it's appropriate to do so (not going for merit etc.). In her case, very cause-driven with national publications and NGO / Hill work instead of the athletics. Targets were HSLACs, and she has no patience for Greek / Bro Culture. Applied to ten schools, including two ivies, three HSLACs, a couple of seven sisters schools and a couple of safeties along with a wild card (St. Andrews). Admitted to seven, including one ivy. Selected Bryn Mawr and very, very happy about it. |
Those are all safeties, not targets for TJ student with her GPA. You should be able to see on Naviance that there are some schools at your DD's GPA where it's almost all green. I recommend on her Common App that she says she's interested in majoring in a STEM subject (math, CS, whatever her grades/coursework support) and a humanities subject. Colleges still are hungry for STEM girls. Women's SLACs (Bryn Mawr, Holyoke, Smith) are targets. Wellesley is a target/reach - they do like high stat TJ STEM students. SLACs like Bates, Colby, Haverford, Kenyon, Oberlin would be targets. Williams & Amherst are harder to get into, but not impossible - they like TJ kids a lot. Definitely have her apply ED to whichever school she decides upon. |

Another reach but possible: Bowdoin

Appreciate your advice. This is very helpful! |
