Yes, Williams, Amherst and Swarthmore are reaches for anyone. Any chance the parents are legacy somewhere? If you can swing the price on the net price calculator, you should really give some thought to applying ED. |

Target might be Rochester, Tulane, BC
|
If merit is desired, they are targets. |
|
I would caution that some of the options posted here (Haverford, Boston College etc) are reaches for EVERYONE. Acceptance rates are THE decisive factor when categorizing a school as a reach or a target. Below a 25% acceptance rate is a reach for every single applicant, regardless of stats. It's because of the volume of applicants.
Just to help manage expectations, it's helpful to keep this in mind. |
+1. PP list all credibility with those phrases and also doesn’t understand how endowments work. W&M is an xlnt school and more prestigious than Richmond |
Not for a TJ (or Big 3) student with those stats/ECs. You can apply to a big basket of those schools and you're going to get into more than a few of them. |
W&M is where fun goes to die. |
Not someone I'm going to take college advice from. |
\ That's garbage. More prestigious for navel-gazing, maybe. For getting a job and getting rich, Richmond owns W&M. |
| Maybe on Richmond’s campus but that’s about it. |
| The kids I know from William and Mary are more academic than Richmond. Very different schools. |
W&M is on Princeton Review's list of colleges for "happy students", "most loved colleges", and "great quality of life" all based on student surveys. |
No, that’s U of Chicago |

I had a similar kid a few years back. SLACs love TJ and you aren’t competing against the whole class. Schools with decent merit we looked at:
WM (in state, not merit) Oberlin Kenyon Macalaster Grinnell St. Olaf We had a male student. But, I believe Smith and Mt. Holyoke do as well. |
Most of the schools on this list are super woke left wing SJW. |
