Suggest a no-impact exercise that's actually fun.

Not sure if trampoline would cut it for you, but it's lower impact.

OP here. I'm really tempted to try. I worry that a wrong landing could wreak havoc, but it sounds like so much fun...

Anonymous wrote:What about Barre? Lots of low impact strength moves. I do the barre classes on peloton and they are leg and core intensive. It’s a good workout.

+1. Former dancer here and I love my barre classes. It captures the same feeling as a ballet class and it’s incredibly good exercise.

Now THAT's a good idea. I wonder if anybody is teaching online? Could be anywhere. Or if there's a good local teacher, let me know!

What can't you do from dance? Just jumping? What about Zumba and talk to the instructor about minimizing jumps.

OP here. I can't jump, I can't point anymore, and can't bear weight in demi-point except briefly in passing through a movement. I have a lot of flexibility still in my hips but need to be careful about overdoing it, and ditto knees: no major problems in the joints themselves but need to be really careful about alignment to avoid pain.

Get physical therapy. They will give you safe exercises to gradually rebuild strength.

Have you tried social dance? Tango, swing, contra? They tend to be a bit slower paced with a wide range of energy/age/skill but there’s a lot less jumping than say jazz/ballet/hiphop/etc.

Falls are rough on old knees/hips, though.

+2 Another barre lover here. I've been doing it for 6 years, absolutely has helped me stay fit and strong as I entered my 50's. My midsection is flat, my butt is high (no sagging), my arms are defined but not overly so. It's just a wonderful workout overall. I do Barre3 but used to do Bar Method. I prefer Barre3 because there's a cardio component where you really get your heart rate up - shockingly we're able to do that without our feet never leaving the ground making it a great low-impact workout.

There's a type of yoga that is doing a bunch of poses in succession. It's like a sequence so you are slmost constantly in motion. Sorry the name is escaping me. I think this plus various mat exercises, like leg lifts, crunches, push ups, might be best. I have a bad foot too, so I feel you there. Indoor pool works year round too.

Vinyasa (flow). If you want more of a challenge, try a hot vinyasa class or a power yoga class. I teach HIIT yoga as well, but that’s not low impact.

I also have foot arthritis. I can’t walk easily so here’s what I do:
-erg on a rowing machine, using the asensei app to make it ‘fun’
- barbell squats/presses and deadlifts. I’m improving which helps my mindset immensely
- exercise bike using clip in (stiff soled) shoes
- kettlebells. I follow KBFit Britt (on YouTube) who is just coming out with a kettlebell solo program that is interesting to me
- slam bag. I stand in place and lift a 15 lb hyperwear sand filled bag over my head and slam it to the ground over and over. Not sure it’s fun, but I gets my heart rate up and it’s very cathartic!
