| I teach middle school at a school that went mask optional a few weeks ago. Parents had to sign up to opt out their kids. Most kids remained masked, but many kids whose parents opted them out chose to wear masks. As time has passed, more and more of those kids have gradually unmasked, but it has been hard for them to adjust. It hasn't been an issue that has been discussed in school at all, and it doesn't seem to be a huge deal. |
| My 2 ES kids reported their teachers were not masked but all students in their classes were save one or two. One of mine unmasked and the other stayed masked. |
| My kids unmasked. If everyone assumes we are republicans they would be wrong. I just gave them the choice bc the CDC said it was OK. |
| my son is in fifth grade. Said a few came in without masks, but the vast majority was masked, including his teacher. |
Liar. I was waiting for this troll to show up. We all know you are lying. |
Troll. |

My kids’ classes
Primary: 3 out of a small class Another primary grade: about 1/3 Upper ES: 2 in a big class Was told by a staff member it was wildly varied, from 2”1 in a class to up to half. |
I think really quickly the peer pressure will be to stop wearing masks. I am having my kid practice "My mom is making me wear a mask so I don't test positive before spring break" for when kids ask him why he's still wearing one. I do think a lot of parents feel that way so hopefully it'll be a non-issue. FWIW, spring break travel truly is the only reason he's still wearing a mask. We're going on a cruise that has been rescheduled 4 times since March 2020. We are all so ready for that trip. If I wasn't worried about testing at the port, I wouldn't really give a flying f about the mask. I'm quite liberal but we're all vaccinated and I'm not worried about getting seriously ill at this point. I was hoping the policy updates would come after spring break but c'est la vie. |
| Our kids are both young ES. We kept them masked today, 100% out of social pressure and fear of judgment. The previous posters claiming only Republicans unmasked is exactly why. We’re as blue as can be. Never voted republican in my life. But we’re all fully vaxxed and are fine with them unmasking at this point…if it weren’t for all my fellow blue friends openly saying they will judge the parents of any kids who unmask. |
| PP again - DS just got home and said most kids were wearing masks but I did get the impression he took more mask breaks than he had been. |
One of my kids says since they see each other unmasked at recess but have been masked all year either way feels normal. Sounded drama free today. |
I think that at this point, no one is assuming a kid who does not wear a mask is making any sort of political statement. The CDC has given us guidelines. We are all following the science - masking is optional because we are in a region with low rates. We've asked my kids to stay in masks until spring break because (a) we don't want to want to get sick with anything before we travel and (b) we are visiting elderly relatives and don't want to get them sick - again with anything. |
I am very liberal, my kids remain masked for reasons described in my post above, but I would not judge you. Your friends are not your friends if they would judge you for this. |

The sad thing is that kids are keeping masks on for reasons that have nothing to do with Covid -- feeling they can "hide" behind the mask.
DC didn't wear a mask, high school, and about 15% weren't wearing masks. I think unmasking will increase over the next few weeks. Kids are waiting for other kids to not wear them first. |
Everyone I've talked to has had this sentiment - masks until spring break, and then we're done. |
