We live in FCPS and there are too many schools for me to care about the middle schools that are near where you live. Where we live, things don't appear to be as competitive as where you live. It's a big county, PP. Not everyone wants their child to go to TJ for high school. |
DP I am an Asian double Ivy grad so… yeah I know. But mental health, spontaneity, and occasional fun are important too! I know parents who rarely took their kids anywhere (even before Covid) out of a fear of them getting sick and missing school. I mean, you do you but… I’d rather enjoy life a little and take the chance… |
So many of us Asian children of immigrants that are really pushing back against the way we were raised because kids should be kids and the pressure from our childhoods was not fun. It's interesting to see wealthy caucasian families treating their children this way now while we are doing the opposite. Chances are, your AAP/TJ kids will turn out like me and the other Asian PP who are putting a lot less pressure on our kids. |
I think that is a separate issue from just letting a kid take a day off school for no reason. My kids only miss if they’re sick or we are going on a vacation, not just because school is a short day. |
I am the person you are responding to, South Asian, and I luckily did not have pressure-cooker parents and enjoyed my childhood. I was just internally motivated. Most of my South Asian peers in HS and undergrad were similar. But I see South Asians who immigrated to this country ~10 years ago putting a lot of pressure on their kids (not just academically, but also music/sports proficiency) and I guess I don’t want to do that. I actually don’t know many white parents doing that. It’s tough. I reaaaallllyyy don’t want to push my kids, but I also hope I’m not going to raise absolute slobs

That was obvious |
White lady, double Ivy grad and have a happy enjoyable life but also don't let me kids miss school for no reason. |
| Way less masked teachers in my school today for workday with no students there. |
| “fewer masked teachers” |
Sorry…it was a long day. |
I’m the poster who let my kid sleep in yesterday. I’m not going to state my race or education because it’s not relevant. My son catches a bus at 6:40 every day. 6:40. So yes, I do not feel any guilt about letting him sleep in yesterday. He checked Schoology and completed his assignments while I was at work. They were done before I got home. I really think I’m modeling balance and responsibility. He still needed to get his work done by a deadline even if he wasn’t physically there. It’s not like he slept in and then did nothing. |
I’d say our staff meeting was about 50/50. ES |
He could have slept in on Friday. |
About 5 out of 100 teacher wore their masks during the PD today. |
Awesome |
