Duke Vs. NU

For comp sci and math, I feel like you can't beat Duke's proximity to such a gigantic tech hub.

Very STEM focused and not political. Down to earth and doesn’t care for superficial people, but likes to get dressed up and is social. Leans towards extrovert. Wants a school with a lot of school spirit. Loves HS football games for social aspect — has no clue what’s going on in the actual game. Smart, stem focused, and wants engineering, but not outwardly nerdy (although she can engage in an intense discussion about math and science concepts). Plan on visiting both in next few months.

Visit both for sure. But this feels like a fit for Northwestern.

+1 in part because NU, situated in Chicagoland, is almost certainly more down to earth than Duke.

I think it's a toss up for the OP, but I found NU to have plenty of sports culture. Duke is sports-obsession, at least for basketball. As for the weather, I MUCH prefer Chicago to North Carolina. Give me cold over heat and humidity any day.

I think the big issue here is that both of these schools are lottery schools.

Most donut hole family kids thinking about EDing at either should probably actually be EDing at Case Western, the University of Rochester, Syracuse University or Grinnell, or some other decent place that will provide merit aid, not squandering their chance to get merit aid by applying to schools that have no interest in them whatsoever.

Isn't Chicago a bigger tech hub than the Research Triangle?

Duke would open more doors in general. Everyone knows Duke is a good school. Northwestern you have to take a moment and think "Is that Northeastern?" and by then you've moved on mentally to the next applicant/candidate.

Lol. This just isn't true.

You've described friends of mine who have graduated from both (and loved their experiences).

Can't go wrong - visit to get a better feel.

My thoughts exactly. She sounds like she'd be super happy at either school!

Personally, I'm partial to Duke (beautiful campus plus the weather is awesome) but Northwestern is amazing, too. My BF's son just graduated from there and loved every minute. The combination of the campus setting plus the city was wonderful. And he had great summer experiences through the school, too.

My brother went to Duke and sister went to Northwestern, and Duke definitely opens more doors and is more recognizable. But we are old so maybe things have changed.

Some of the most popular and strong majors are communication, psychology, journalism, drama, etc.

These are starting salary after getting a degree:

Journalism - $43100
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?147767-Northwestern-University&fos_code=0904&fos_credential=3

Communication - $48041
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?147767-Northwestern-University&fos_code=0901&fos_credential=3

Psychology - $38,048
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?147767-Northwestern-University&fos_code=4201&fos_credential=3

Drama - $20,869
https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?147767-Northwestern-University&fos_code=5005&fos_credential=3

These must be for rich people who seek prestige and don't care about money.

Would any hard working tax paying middle class pay $300,000 for those degrees?
Am I missing something?

Yes, you're missing that many people choose a college knowing they will attend graduate school so salary out of undergrad is not particularly important. Many people choose a college based on the education they will get and experience they will have. They don't look at college as a trade schoool.

So I'm not missing anytihng, and you are confirming it.
From the beginning, these people plan to pour more money into grad school after alredy spendong $$$ for theses degrees.
Whatever that experience is worth that much money for those people.

So this is definitley not for hard working tax paying American middle class.

No, only for lazy, tax-avoiding middle class.

You sound like Marie Antoinette. Come out of your castle and get to know what real common people are like.

I am one of the older ones on here and I simply do not recall a time when Duke may have been considered more prestigious than Northwestern. It’s a basketball school that also happens to be excellent academically, but so is NW which has been academically elite for at least as long as I’ve been around.

The only problem is that people who didn't go to Duke find Duke grads insufferable.
