What I don't understand is that a school like Northwestern is such an elite school.
Some of the most popular and strong majors are communication, psychology, journalism, drama, etc. These are starting salary after getting a degree: Journalism - $43100 https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?147767-Northwestern-University&fos_code=0904&fos_credential=3 Communication - $48041 https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?147767-Northwestern-University&fos_code=0901&fos_credential=3 Psychology - $38,048 https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?147767-Northwestern-University&fos_code=4201&fos_credential=3 Drama - $20,869 https://collegescorecard.ed.gov/school/?147767-Northwestern-University&fos_code=5005&fos_credential=3 These must be for rich people who seek prestige and don't care about money. Would any hard working tax paying middle class pay $300,000 for those degrees? Am I missing something? |

A different perspective here - I went to Duke, but am from Chicago and hung out with friends at Northwestern. Northwestern is fratty too and sororities are just as big a part of the social scene. Duke's weather is waaaay better, the campus is beautiful, and nothing can compare to the school spirit from basketball. I had so much fun and have so many great memories from college. Tons of South Asians and East Asians at Duke too - something like 20% when I went there in the 2010s.
Ultimately, your kid will love whatever school they end up at, but I think Duke is just more fun.

Yes, you're missing that many people choose a college knowing they will attend graduate school so salary out of undergrad is not particularly important. Many people choose a college based on the education they will get and experience they will have. They don't look at college as a trade schoool. |
So I'm not missing anytihng, and you are confirming it. From the beginning, these people plan to pour more money into grad school after alredy spendong $$$ for theses degrees. Whatever that experience is worth that much money for those people. So this is definitley not for hard working tax paying American middle class. |
No, only for lazy, tax-avoiding middle class. |
It's not Northwestern that is producing the lower average salary---it's the degree type it self. However, NU has been top 3 in Journalism for over 40+ years! If you want to do journalism, it's the place to be---and the connections you will make are astounding. Those connections is how graduates make the big break in journalism/communications. Same for Drama/theater/Music----just take a look at all of the Hollywood talent that has come from NU. Yes---while many cannot afford that for a "low paying degree", there are plenty who can afford it as well as NU is a "meet financial need" school (and has been for decades). Also, it's NU, so many are double majoring/minoring in something that can be used to "fall back on", it's just something Cats do |

I'm South Asian and went to Duke, so biased, but I 100% think that's the way to go! There are many students at Duke who fit his profile (and plenty who don't, which is great). Duke has a weird, warped reputation on this board, but it's mostly nerdy science types....well maybe not mostly. But a lot. A lot a lot.
I think Northwestern is also such a fabulous school. I think my DD may ED there. Visit both if you can. Good luck with everything! |

Northwestern is also excellent for traditionally high paying fields, not just the arts/journalism/comm. Weird anti-NU vendetta user comes to these threads every once in a while.
OP, I agree you should try to visit both campuses if you can! |
It’s to Northwestern’s credit that a student can major in something like theater or journalism or communication and still end up on a lucrative career path. That’s why it’s elite. |

Thank you OP for starting this thread. I don’t want to hijack it, but wondering what people think about a white girl who is interested in both.
Very STEM focused and not political. Down to earth and doesn’t care for superficial people, but likes to get dressed up and is social. Leans towards extrovert. Wants a school with a lot of school spirit. Loves HS football games for social aspect — has no clue what’s going on in the actual game. Smart, stem focused, and wants engineering, but not outwardly nerdy (although she can engage in an intense discussion about math and science concepts). Plan on visiting both in next few months. |

Visit both for sure. But this feels like a fit for Northwestern. |
You've described friends of mine who have graduated from both (and loved their experiences). Can't go wrong - visit to get a better feel. |
Duke, hands down! |
