5 Nope, I am not someone who needs people to talk to me in dulcet tones. Chew the meat, spit out the bones. That said, I don't spend any time in the politics forum, which always seems nuts. What has been surprising is the racism, but this is America.

Wondering stuff like:

1 What field are you in? Seems to be a lot of attorneys

Space time traveling SAHM 🦄🚀 but hope to become self employed artist and writer eventually.

Background: medical related/ art/ philosophy/ theology.

2 Where did you grow up?
Other side of the world in the subtropics.

3 At what age did you move to the DMV and why?
DH’s job. Relatively safe place for our then very young, oldest DC since we narrowly escaped violent riots in previous post (lived through a coup later). I quickly gained employment in very interesting field but DC both had special needs and needed me more than the formal economy did.
I love the diversity, quirky history and vibrant undercurrents of life in DC.

4 Did you or are you planning to retire here?
Open to that and other possibilities. We do have a great life here but it will depend where works best for everyone in our immediate family.

5 Does the tone on here bother you?
Sometimes (mosquito bites in summer level of annoyance) but the moderators are swift to remove pointlessly offensive stuff. I do feel sad for some OPs when their points and questions raised are misconstrued to be much more malignant than obviously intended. Also, it is tiresome when posters play Gotcha games with trivial side bars, miss the main points of arguments being made, and deliver misdirected rebukes in artless ways. I do enjoy creative edgy snark though.

The DCUM positives outweigh the negatives in terms of providing safe, anonymous, adult play ground. Some posts are very funny to the point that I feel smooth Italian coffee blowing through my nostrils as I snort. I enjoy some of the one line bomb artists and hope to emulate that style when I grow up. Some Posts are poignant and heart breaking, while others illuminate different ways of thinking that had previously evaded me.

I enjoy communicating with different types of people without usual RL need for small talk.

DCUM is like a variety act show at the Kennedy Center Millennial Stage -/ but where no one has to audition to get a role. Some have gifted voices and can sing, dance and act while others are tone deaf, out of tune and forget their lines. Some derail different numbers to redirect topics to whatever their obsessions are. The show makes me laugh, often in places where that is not intended. The main theme of the show seems to be that we all flawed and annoying in our own unique ways.

1) Psychologist (although I frequently post as a teacher)
2) All over the world. My dad was military & fed.
3) After college graduation because my parents lived here.
4) Yes, our primary home will always be here although we may have a pied a terre or two or three in locations where the children settle if they don't come back to the DMV.
5) No, not really. I lurked for years before finally beginning to post 7 or 8 years ago. I try to be kind; however, I can be blunt on some of the Schools, Tweens & Teens or Family Relationships threads, when I see strings of validation for an OP that is troublesome in its content. My focus and favor is always on what is the child's best interest, not feeding an adult's ego. I appreciate being able to do that anonymously because some adults here are vicious about defending their right to navel gaze or to serve their own interest without regard to the impact on a child. I would hate for my professional name and reputation be besmirched by a troll or a horde of trolls upset over my calling them out on behaviors or opinions that don't put a child's interests first.

2 West coast, been here 10 years
3 30 for work and SO was here
4 I’m not even sure I can stand to stay here one more year

1 What field are you in? Tech
2 Where did you grow up? NYC
3 At what age did you move to the DMV and why? 21, for two years
4 Did you or are you planning to retire here? Hell no
5 Does the tone on here bother you? Here on DCUM? The only thing that bothers me here are the super insecure people and the policers who want to tell everyone how to behave and talk. Here in the DMV? Yes, that's why I left after two years. So many people from small towns thinking they have to be b**chy to get ahead and think it's appropriate to judge people by what purse or watch they have. I wanted to live among people less superficial.

This is OP. Some really interesting responses to 5, thank you!

Since a few people have mentioned sex and race to be of interest - l’m female and white, married to a brown guy with a heavy accent - he immigrated from South America as an adult.

1. SAHM
2. Montgomery Co Md
3. N/A
4. Hell no!
5. Not really. When I read negative or mean posts with name-calling, I imagine a whiny, high pitched Karen type voice and think, "She's at it again". Even though it likely is several posters who do that, I've combined them into one beeotch.

3. Right after college, followed a boy, did not marry him. Ended up falling in love with politics and stayed
4. Maybe? We have a retirement home paid off by the ocean but think we may keep a condo/apt here for a while too
5. Yes but sadly been on so long I ignore. I don't EVER step foot into the political forum. Am sad to see the creeping of politics back into Recent Topics list with the VA gov posts.
