Wondering stuff like:

1 What field are you in? Seems to be a lot of attorneys
2 Where did you grow up?
3 At what age did you move to the DMV and why?
4 Did you or are you planning to retire here?
5 Does the tone on here bother you?

1. SAHM. Multiple degrees. As an ex-WOHM - worked in tech research.
2. Asia
3. Immigrated to US for DH's work. Came to DMV at 28.
4. Yes. Retiring in-place at our SFH that we bought when housing market was at bottom. It allowed me to SAH. Kids will have our house as base if they want to stick around here, which I hope they do.

5. Is tricky question

First of all, DCUM is a source of great info and advice because there are so many highly educated, well travelled and cosmopolitan people in DMV who are commenting here. They can be a bit snarky too (they don't suffer fools gladly and sometimes they can't believe how uninformed you are...especially when it comes for finance, health or education) but they will give solid help and advice. So this is a great resource.

DCUM is also an online anonymous forum. I also saw a lot of Faux-News, non-DMV types, posting here since around 2016 and it is very eye-opening. Since I am neither White nor Christian - the racism, hatefulness, envy, entitlement, ignorance, cultural differences of these people that are stated openly was a shocking reality check about the state of USA. I have modified my public life accordingly. Another thing is that I am pretty good about figuring out when Blacks are posting (and what types of Blacks - AA or Africans). The Blacks who grew up here - they don't bother to take offense or comment on many of the controversial posts because they were clued in much, much before I was. I am still reacting...but the more savvy Blacks, they just grayrock the blah blah blahs.

Probably
Dislike the outright rude/not clever snarky posters. Appreciate the clever snarky posters and don’t mind the blunt posters if not intentionally unkind

Think it’s interesting you didnt ask male vs female

The acronym for this board is DCUMAD. It is not for moms only; it’s for the dads too.

- Physician
- Midwestern state
- At 30 when I finished residency, for my first attending job
- Will likely retire somewhere warmer, kinder, and less busy. When I visit my parents back home I am acutely aware of how few angry drivers there are
- The tone? Sometimes. As another poster noted, lots of great info on here (real estate, finance, relationships). I love reading the thoughts of smart people. I am often disappointed at the scattered resident male (seeming) trolls who spout misogyny. As a mom of a girl, I'm sad that those guys are still out there.

1. IT Govcon

2. MoCo

3. Moved away for college and then 6 years overseas & California; moved back 8 years ago when I started having kids

4 He!! no.

5 Sometimes. But the snark is what makes DCUM great. I don't love that every assumes the worse of everyone else.

1 What field are you in? Law
2 Where did you grow up? NJ
3 At what age did you move to the DMV and why? Starting in 2003 but not consecutively- went to NYC area for a few years in there then came back. I came here to be closer to my parents for help with the kids & my work field has a huge market in DC so it worked out easily
4 Did you or are you planning to retire here? Maybe I will retire here. We have a 15 year mortgage & will have our house paid off in about 6 years. I want to become a snow bird and get a house or apt in FL for retirement too.
5 Does the tone on here bother you? Yes - a lot of them - but occasionally there are some funny and kind / helpful people - but unfortunately for me - I can’t quit it. I’m addicted. I set a daily time limit for myself though.

1 What field are you in? Management Consulting
2 Where did you grow up? India
3 At what age did you move to the DMV and why? 31 followed spouse
4 Did you or are you planning to retire here? Likely - will depend on how dispersed the kids are
5 Does the tone on here bother you? Sometimes - when the ideologues take over. In general I have seen this site evolve over time and appreciate Jeff being invested. It could easily have been a disaster otherwise.
