1. Hospice Chaplain 2. All over the world 3. We have lived in the DMV four different times. My dad was military. My DH is a fed. 4. Hell no. 5. It makes me sad sometimes. |
1. Nonprofit fundraising 2. MD/DE 3. 21 a week after college graduation to work on the Hill (degree in Politics). My mom and dad met in suburban MD and I have extended family still there. 4. We’ll see - I don’t think we will retire here. Thinking about the Tidewater area 5. Sometimes? |
| Personally, instead of wondering where people are from it would be more helpful to know their gender and race. There are lots of presumptions that DCUM is all white women and it would be good to have a better idea of how true this is. |

1. Fed
2. Grew up in Appalachia 3. Moved here for a job in my early 30s 4. It depends on where our kids are living; I don’t want to be too far from them. Ideally, though, we’d retire somewhere else. 5. Yes, the ugliness bothers me. A couple of times I’ve posted with a snotty tone, and I really regret that. |

Very overeducated SAHM due to SN kid.
Grew up in rural area in MDVA. Came to suburban DC after being overseas for several years. Will retire here. Or at least keep a place here. I don't understand people who spend a lilfetime establishing connections only to give it all up when they have more time. I love this site. I have gotten so much good advice. It has made me more self aware and also paranoid. I can vent my frustrations anonymously and look for information as well. I'm a loner so it also gives me a sense of having social connections. |

1 What field are you in? Management consulting 2 Where did you grow up? Bethesda 3 At what age did you move to the DMV and why? Age 3 but my parents lived here before I was born and both sets of grandparents lived here 4 Did you or are you planning to retire here? Part of the time. We already have a second home where we will spend half our time. But it will also depend where our kids settle. Neither are in DC now. 5 Does the tone on here bother you? Not usually, it’s a window into how others think and helps me get outside my rich white person bubble |
White male HHI currently 300k been here (or listserv) about 18 years |
White female HHI 250k been here like 10 years |

1 What field are you in? I’m a fed 2 Where did you grow up? - Moco 3 At what age did you move to the DMV and why? - Baby, parents were stationed here (military) 4 Did you or are you planning to retire here? - No I moved away a few years ago (in my 30s). Was already addicted before I left 5 Does the tone on here bother you? - It’s part of what makes DCUM DCUM. Some people bother me for sure and I try to cancel out the bullies with genuine advice in the relationships and expectant moms forums. But the tone is also what creates the absolutely hilarious dcum moments I’m always coming back for! So pros and cons but it wouldn’t be the same without it |

1. Teacher
2. DC 3. I lived in DC until college in Chicago, then moved to NYC and SF and NYC again and then back to DC to raise my family (11 years ago). I thought it was a great place to grow up. 4. Yes 5. Sometimes but I feel like I am fairly good at not getting trolled. I have participated in a lot of forums like this that are non anonymous and I much prefer that. |

1. I lead talent acquisition for a mid-size company
2. I grew up poor in western PA 3. I moved to the D.C. area in 2000, was looking for an area with good job opportunities. My boyfriend lived here so it made sense. I had met him in an online chatroom BTW (MUCH less common and more stigmatized then) and we had only met in person once or twice before I moved here and moved in with him. 4. Unsure. We really like the area but we aren't ready to make that decision yet. 5. No, but I've been on this site for 15+ years so I'm sure it got to me at some point when I was younger. |
Oh, and I was 21 when I moved here. |

1 What field are you in? Retired sahp 2 Where did you grow up? Outside of Boston 3 At what age did you move to the DMV and why? 19- for a one year internship with Bread for the World 4 Did you or are you planning to retire here? No, once DH retires we are out of here and headed back to New England 5 Does the tone on here bother you? Sometimes, I like some of the bluntness, but I don’t like it when it crosses over to meanness. I am tired of the political talk everywhere. |

1. Cybersecurity
2. Grew up out West 3. Moved to DC at 35 lived out in NoVa and needed a better commute time 4. We will retire here and have a second home in Paris 5. The racism and classism bother me deeply. I’m reducing my time here. |

1 Formerly education 2 Arlington 3 Born here 4 Retired here in 2020 and moved away ASAP 5 I don't think there is a DCUM "tone". Every possible attitude, belief and opinion is available here. Anonymity emboldens some people to say things that are mean or outrageous or just plain wrong but none of that bothers me because I get it. It's very easy to ignore what you don't like or value. |
