There have been other posts like this on the group where someone was hurt or verbally assaulted, posted their sad story online, only to be lectured to by some kid who merely says “don’t call the cops” you should just grin and bear it.

I’d post my annoyance on the groups page, but honestly the mods would probably kick me off for being “rude” or something.

Basically kids were walking around with paintball guns (in the cold snow) shooting things. Paintballs can freeze and really hurt. Also, this is the same neighborhood where kids were lighting leaves on fire under cars, there has been a large increase in car jackings, etc…so when I read posters encouraging victims to just move on and not do anything like tell the police I’m kind of surprised. The kids were on camera.

These are really just childish pranks.

Besides, what does the city provide for these kids to do? Nothing?

Why is it the City's job to raise these kids? And the city offers all kinds of things at rec centers, schools, summer jobs etc.

This is why Roe cannot be overturned. How many more kids can DC be responsible for raising?

Some kids are basically living in a war zone, statistically. They've never been very far out of their neighborhood, let alone the Smithsonians. They are locked up and go right back to crime because that is their life. P.S. there's not that much going on at the rec centers

You’ve basically made the case for less subsidized public housing in cities. Look at Potomac Gardens in Capitol Hill. So much crime on an otherwise nice area caused by that development. Or anywhere else for that matter. You’re going to see a ton of crime once Reservation 13 and its 2/3 ultra low AMI housing set aside are built. It sucks. I don’t get the self flagellation about this. Let the market work the way it should and those who can’t pay just move to where they can and let neighborhoods rise. Or just allow some market rate, but not so much of a subsidized amount of units. I am not going to argue with people about this. It’s just a fact. And we’ll keep have naive or obstinate bleeding heart SJW types on Facebook neighborhood groups trying to shame anyone who posts about it in like 10 years once it all comes to fruitiruon. The simplest thing is to just to let developers develop the area organically.

Well, that was uplifting! Rec centers suck amirite? Guess that’s just the way it is and we need to keep throwing millions into programs, summer jobs, after school programs, snap, ent, free money to go to schools, but to not demand any self accountability for any of this stuff. It’s just intractable right? But any complaints about it and seeking change would be too patronizing? I think the current solution is to keep complaining that there are not enough resources, when there are actually a bunch, but not hold any parents accountable for their actions because it’s not w0ke enough.

Check the crime stats in DC. Facts are not racist. Your overreaction is very telling though. Especially given that perps and victims are far more likely to be the same race. Neither do the current policies of not keeping violent criminals off the streets, which is exactly what's happening in DC right now. There has to be middle ground.

I disagree that nobody wants to be a criminal as that lifestyle is glamorized. Understanding and empathy is what you employ after removing the person from the streets. It's not meant to give criminals carte blanche to victimize other citizens. Progressives right now are providing criminals with moral justification to steal and commit violence.

I'd be wary about generalizing this about the members of a group like this (I'm not in it, ftr). My experience in similar groups in similar areas is that they tend to be diverse because the neighborhood is diverse, and sometimes the most "law and order" voices in the group are older black residents who have been living there a long time and blame the crime on a lack of policing. It's easy to generalize if you've never lived in a neighborhood like this. But your assumptions are wrong. For instance, in my current neighborhood, the residents who are most vocal about opposing police intervention and urging empathy for young people committing crimes are also the most privileged (young, white, professionals). If you spend time talking to the "less privileged" neighbors, you get a much more nuanced take than just "defund the police" and "don't be a Karen."

This is true. I grew up in se dc and am on that Facebook group.

However, you also have mods who delete anything that could be remotely against the progressive grain. It’s stifling. We have no options in the city. Cries for more moderate voices in the city council are futile. We as citizen living in the middle of the city are all guinea pigs now, part of the grand scheme to reorder policing and criminal policy. Crime is rising, but nothing is being done except useless violence interruptors funded by millions of tax payer money, with all studies showing they do nothing to lower crime. Or we have endless circular discussion trying to “find the root cause of crime so we can fix it.” The root fking cause is poverty, poor or absent parenting, couple with the legacy of redlining, Jim Crow and slavery, and all this other stuff. It’s pretty obvious. Over the decades we’ve thrown millions into programs and spent the most of any place in America on schooling per pupil. Now all we’re doing is lowering the bar to allow certain crimes to be committed with impunity. It sucks. Progressive criminal policy is effectively self flagellation by people who don’t commit crimes. I wonder how this sort of wokeness will impact our soft and hard power on the world stage. Are we just going to self doubt every fking thing we do globally to ensure we conform to every facet of social justice? I really feel sometimes like malign actors probably take advantage of the racial reckoning to expand autocracy on the world stage. This kind of inner turmoil in America on a consistent basis. This kind of paralysis but hoping not to offend anyone will really be our downfall unless we sack up.
