How do middle-aged women like J. Lo avoid middle aged spread?

Late 40s is a whole different ballgame than 50s. In terms of my looks-- face and body-- I think of my late 40s as my last hurrah.

Cook everything from scratch. Avoid factory made processed foods. This also includes salad dressing, yogurts etc.

Don't eat out at restaurants much. Inflated portions distort normal portions. If you order an entree, eat half and take half home. If you order wine skip dessert. Split dessert with your significant other. Eat out no more than once or twice a month, max.

Don't snack. You're not a squirrel. Eat three meals only.

Don't drink your calories.

Thin isn't always healthier. Watch your metabolic health. When you have your annual physical, look carefully at your numbers, A1C, blood pressure etc. Be extremely proactive if you develop metabolic issues.

Walk daily, brisk exercise is good. Two miles a day is good.

Don't bother counting calories. Eat real food you have made.

I don't generally avoid food groups but I do avoid or limit whites, e.g. white flour, white rice.

With that waist to hip ratio already, menopause will not be kind to your shape

I’m 55. No spread. It’s not inevitable. For most people it takes discipline. I eat healthy most of the time. I exercise daily. I don’t smoke. I very rarely drink. I just take really good care of my body. 5’5 and 115 pounds. Same as I was in high school. My body has changed, of course. Age and childbirth do that. But overall, I look and feel great. No surgery. No Botox. I will never do either. I’m perfectly fine looking like a 55 year old woman.

Ouch. Someone sounds jealous. Her hip waist ratio is 0.81 range. I suppose your hip waist ratio is better. I personally would love to have her measurements but sadly I'm just not built like that, not even in my youth.

I don’t get these posts. You think this is new advice? People know not to eat garbage and drink too much. People know they are supposed to exercise, etc. everything you wrote is common knowledge.

NP. And yet, most of you are fat. There is no magic diet. There are no Shortcuts. This poster did a great job of sharing what works for her. I’m the 5’5, 115 poster. I agree with her, but I never skip desert.

No sh!t. That’s the point. PP’s just listing what you can find on any fitness site but she managed to sound unnecessarily smug about it.

I’m not fat, but fat isn’t a moral failing. You are, however, unpleasant.

32 26 32 poster here. Thanks so much, 115 lady for sticking up for me! 50 is a few short months away so it is encouraging to see that at 55, you can still keep the middle age spread at bay. You are inspiring. As you said I was just sharing what has worked for me in these 49 years in earth.

I'm 50, 5'4 and 115. I eat all the time (3 meals plus snacks - guess I am squirrel) and the only thing I avoid is most added sugar and highly processed foods (I am not making my own yogurt lol, but I'm not buying yogurt with 20 grams of added sugar)

I walk 4 or 5 miles (uphill) 5 or 6 times a week and try to only eat when hungry (which is basically every 2 or 3 hours). I know women my age who are heavier despite eating 2 small meals and no snacks so I figure it's dumb luck. (I bear little resemblance to JLo though - I look my age)

Ideal for women’s health is under 0.8. 0.8–0.85 is moderate risk, 0.86 and above is high risk.

Also, “middle aged spread” doesn’t mean you gain weight, it is that your shape literally changes with the hormone drop off. So you can diet And restrict all you want, but spare tire will still appear eventually, even with little weight change. Especially if your waist is not proportionately small compared to hips pre menopause

Every celebrity in her 50s is on estrogen. Estrogen keeps fat off of your middle.

Looks at Halle Barre. You have to eat very clean and exercise a lot. There are no secrets.

And by exercise i don't mean poo pooing around with light weights where you do 20 reps, light jogs on the treadmill, light workouts on the ellipticals. You need to lift heavy weights and actually break sweats doing cardio.

You need to exercise everyday--even if that's just a 2-3 mile walk.
You also need to lift weights 3x week and increase weights as you get stronger.
You need to build muscle--it will help keep your shape and keep off cellulite.
Regular massages also help for cellulite.
Facial massage are great too to keep skin fresh and glowing.
Eat clean but don't deprive yourself.
Intermittent fasting helps too.
