How do middle-aged women like J. Lo avoid middle aged spread?

100% have you seen her without photoshop? Cellulite and wrinkles all over.

You have a BMI of 17 and are underweight. This will not serve you as well as you are thinking in the event of major stressor or illness. Perhaps “exercising intensely” 6 days a week is doing the opposite of keeping you healthy, especially when coupled with a very particular diet.

NP - you sound a tad envious, and that you're trying to justify why you overeat and don't work out.

Lol. I don’t know any sane person would strive for a BMI of 17. Yikes. It isn’t a good look

DP -so what do you strive for? You understand that PP can literally gain a couple of pounds and have an ideal BMI?

I am upper middle class but not wealthy. And I've had two children and work full time. My tips that have worked for years

Cook everything from scratch. Avoid factory made processed foods. This also includes salad dressing, yogurts etc.

Don't eat out at restaurants much. Inflated portions distort normal portions. If you order an entree, eat half and take half home. If you order wine skip dessert. Split dessert with your significant other. Eat out no more than once or twice a month, max.

Don't snack. You're not a squirrel. Eat three meals only.

Don't drink your calories.

Thin isn't always healthier. Watch your metabolic health. When you have your annual physical, look carefully at your numbers, A1C, blood pressure etc. Be extremely proactive if you develop metabolic issues.

Walk daily, brisk exercise is good. Two miles a day is good.

Don't bother counting calories. Eat real food you have made.

I don't generally avoid food groups but I do avoid or limit whites, e.g. white flour, white rice.

With that waist to hip ratio already, menopause will not be kind to your shape

Nah and she'll look amazing in the clothes, unlike 90% of post menopausal women, unfortunately.

I’m not there yet, but my mom recently turned 65 and is still very petite/in great shape.

Having lived with her most of my life and then again during the pandemic, her secret is simply not eating very much and running 1-3 times a week, walking every day. But in general, I think it’s the “not eating much.” She eats mainly vegetarian and while she enjoys food and wine, she mainly eats small meals and never ever snacks. I actually lost weight while she lived with me. I think her mother ate the same way. I hope to look like her at her age!

1) 5-6 days a week of intense exercise
2) pretty clean diet, little to no alcohol
3) Hormones (after menopause)
4) genetics

And bump all those down for the real #1 which is MONEY. Her income depends on it. And she's very rich so she can pay for WHATEVER she needs. Trainers and surgeons.

She still looks better than most of us, including myself.

If I had enough money to hire a personal chef, a weekly facial person, a weekly hair stylist, a daily trainer, I would look darn good for my age too.

If that were the "real #1", then I would not have been able to write my 1-4 reasons of how I've avoided middle age spread. I don't have a chef, or a personal trainer. But I do have the motivation to stay fit, and am honest with myself when I feel myself drifting into a more lazy lifestyle. I don't let that happen too often, and when it does I don't stay there for too long.

Pilates and great genes.

Genetics. My mother is 67 and I can see her abs. She does yoga 2x a week, no cardio. Eats normally.

That’s because you don’t have the discipline to achieve and maintain a lower bmi.
