We looked at Brookside but ended up in a house just outside of the historic district of Warrenton and love the walkability. Like one of the PPs said, it really is like Mayberry here. After nearly 20 years in the immediate DC suburbs, we love every part of our new life here. Yes, there are many Republicans but it isn’t some kind of litmus test for friendship. We have found all of our neighbors and people in town to be exceptionally friendly and welcoming.

Curious if Fauquier High and Kettle Run High are similar/equivalent in terms of opportunities, etc.?

Brookside resident here.

Brookside is in Warrenton (mailing address is Warrenton, 20187). Vint Hill is neighboring town. Walking distance from Brookside.

Warrenton proper (downtown) is about 6 miles from Brookside/Vint Hill.

Amazon is putting a data center in Warrenton.

For any catholics, check out St. John the Evangelist church. It is one of the most beautiful churches I have seen. Looks European. All stone. Gorgeous

And does the whole Mayberry comparison apply to all three (Brookside, Vint Hill and downtown Warrenton)? Trying to understand pros/cons of each

Question about the GS ratings in this area... We often get told that lower GS ratings has to do with non-English speaking students and is not indicative of how good the school is. With that said, the GS ratings of the schools in this area appear to be much lower than ACPS/FCPS, etc. Is that for the same reason? Looking at James Brumfield and W.C. Taylor, specifically. Thank you!

I’ve heard really good things about the school from many. I am most disappointed with the middle school here (it’s not bad or anything, I’m just not as impressed as I thought I would be). We have mostly average to low average kids so I can’t really speak to how the advanced courses are. I have one child that is pretty precocious and will surely test into their gifted program when we decide to stop homeschooling him. I’ve heard decent things about that as well. All in all, we love living here and the schools have been wonderful for us.

Thank You for your info. Where do kids mostly hang out? at their houses? is there a community pool , sport leagues they can join for exercise and making friends?

New poster here.
I don't live in Brookside but live nearby in Prince William county. I'm somewhat familiar with the Brookside community because I'm a triathlete and the REV3 sprint series held several races in that area (the run course went through part of Brookside.)
From the map it appears there are two community pools, one off of Boathouse rd. and one near the corner of Riley rd. and Brookside Pkwy.
There is also the Larry Weeks pool in the Vint Hill area (walking/biking distance from most of the Brookside neighborhood) that is operated by the county, so you can get a season pass or pay a daily entrance fee.
For an indoor pool, you will want to go to the Warf (also run by the county) and about a 20 minute drive away.

I'm not as familiar with the youth sports leagues in that area but I'm sure they have them. Vint Hill (it's right next to Brookside) also has a Brewery (Old Bust Head) and a small winery (Vint Hill craft winery.)

How do you like PW County and the schools there? Gainesville looks interesting/nice - lake nearby, a bit closer to the city, etc. TIA!

My kids attend one of those schools and we have not seen that correlation. We came from an MCPS school with a large number of non-English speakers with a GS rating a few points higher. If I had to guess I would say that it relates more to the number of enrichment opportunities in an MCPS/APS/FCPS vs Fauquier.

I saw that Fauqier MS only offers one year of foreign language-for example just Spanish 1. is it possible to go to the HS for Spanish 2 in 8th grade? or do it online?. The other difference from NOVA is that kids do the HS course of World History in grade 8 while this is not available in Fauqier. I have not seen any other differences except that F only offers AP which is fine and comes down to preference.

So you think the current school is "as good" as the ones you were at in MC? You're happy and your kids are fulfilled and challenged?

All of the schools in Fauquier County are good if not excellent. Surprised to see so many people from my area on this board.

Can someone comment on the new Board member Gallo? What is Fauqier County's (both the school board and then the parents) position on masks (once Omicron is over) and vaccines for kids? I am of the belief that unvaccinated kids will be mandated by the schools to wear masks in NOVA until they graduate.Does Fauqier lean the same way or are they more that it is the parents choice?
In NOVA I am very surprised(or not) to see that summer camps by private schools/clubs are mandating vaccines for all students to attend summer programs and sports. Not sure if anyone listened to FDA advisors authorization on the vaccine, but the majority clearly stated this should not be mandated for kids.

Yes, 100%. I think the biggest advantage my kids have now in Fauquier is the much smaller class sizes, that has been great. Now being removed from it, I can see that the heavy emphasis on enrichment in MCPS is largely because of the high number of Type A helicopter parents convinced that their ES kid is a genius and needs so much more enrichment than the average kid.

all three, I believe, are like Mayberry. I live in brookside but the town of Warrenton is lovely. as is vint hill.

the one downside of Warrenton is there isn't high speed internet through the county, but they are working on that. along 29 they are burying the lines to get it to the area.

in brookside and vint hill there is high speed internet.

the people here are very nice. they are less inclined to wear masks. not sure what the percentage of people that are vaccinated. the children in the school (private) don't all wear masks. they are encouraged, but not required.

Right now there is a mask mandate for Fauquier Public Schools. I think you can request to opt out for limited reasons, but being fully vaxxed is not a reason. The school year started with masks optional, but shortly thereafter a universal mask mandate for VA public schools was put in effect. I highly doubt kids will be require to mask forever. Once the universal VA public school mask mandate is lifted, I would not be surprised if Fauquier makes masks optional or at least allows fully vaxxed kids to be mask-free. The county itself has no mask mandate and mask wearing is not prevalent out here compared to the close in DC suburbs.

Just saw a news report on Youngkin’s inauguration and apparently one of his first acts will be to repeal the universal mask mandate for VA public schools. So this issue will be resolved sooner rather than later. I’d love it if the county waited until the Omicron surge has crashed, but my kids are fully vaxxed so it is what it is.
