I’ve heard really good things about the school from many. I am most disappointed with the middle school here (it’s not bad or anything, I’m just not as impressed as I thought I would be). We have mostly average to low average kids so I can’t really speak to how the advanced courses are. I have one child that is pretty precocious and will surely test into their gifted program when we decide to stop homeschooling him. I’ve heard decent things about that as well. All in all, we love living here and the schools have been wonderful for us.

Thank You for your info. Where do kids mostly hang out? at their houses? is there a community pool , sport leagues they can join for exercise and making friends?

New poster here.
I don't live in Brookside but live nearby in Prince William county. I'm somewhat familiar with the Brookside community because I'm a triathlete and the REV3 sprint series held several races in that area (the run course went through part of Brookside.)
From the map it appears there are two community pools, one off of Boathouse rd. and one near the corner of Riley rd. and Brookside Pkwy.
There is also the Larry Weeks pool in the Vint Hill area (walking/biking distance from most of the Brookside neighborhood) that is operated by the county, so you can get a season pass or pay a daily entrance fee.
For an indoor pool, you will want to go to the Warf (also run by the county) and about a 20 minute drive away.

I'm not as familiar with the youth sports leagues in that area but I'm sure they have them. Vint Hill (it's right next to Brookside) also has a Brewery (Old Bust Head) and a small winery (Vint Hill craft winery.)

How do you like PW County and the schools there? Gainesville looks interesting/nice - lake nearby, a bit closer to the city, etc. TIA!

I like it a lot. I actually live right next to Gainesville in Bristow. My kids are older so I'm a bit out of touch with the elementary level, and probably even the middle school level, but I have a kid at the new high school (Gainesville) and I am very impressed so far. We did not enjoy Marsteller middle school, but have friends whose kids went to Gainesville Middle school (right next to Gainesville High school.)

The lake--Lake Manassas? Unfortunately there is no public access. https://dwr.virginia.gov/waterbody/lake-manassas/
There is a neighborhood right near the lake (Saranac) and I remmber YEARS ago (maybe 2007?) we looked at houses there and it sounded like the residents of that neighborhood would have access to boating on the lake. I found this article
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/lake-manassas-suit-heads-to-trial/2011/02/18/ABYXPbJ_story.html but don't know the outcome of what happened.
I'm actually not aware of much lake-boating available nearby. I know when my son was much younger, his cubscout troop went fishing (from boats) on Lake Brittle, which is in Fauquier county. https://dwr.virginia.gov/waterbody/lake-brittle/#overview

Towards the middle/eastern end of the county, the Montclair community DOES have a lake that residents (and guests--but not the general public) can swim and boat in. I have a few friends that have lived in Montclair and they LOVE it. I will say that my friends that lived there sent their kids to private school or home schooled, so I don't know about the schools in that part of the county.
For outdoor recreation, we have the Manassas Battlefield which provides miles and miles of trails and rolling hills. It's great-I typically go there at least once a week for a run/hike! We're also only about an hour away from Shennandoah National Park. The Eastern end of the county has Prince William Forest national park, which is not as well known as most national parks--so it's wonderfully "not crowded."

Prince William schools do allow students to apply to "speciality programs" at other PW schools they are not zoned for. Some programs are harder to get into than others--for example Marsteller middle school has a "math and science" specialty program that was harder to get into if you didn't live in boundaries. They did a lottery from all elligible out of boundary applicants. When my kids were there, few kids from out of bounds were selected in the lottery--but it's been a few years so things may have changed.

Thank you. We are the OP. We are seriously considering moving , but have definitely decided to rent before buying. Are there any rentals, appt that feed into the Greenville/Auburn and Kettle Run HS? We would have kids in all three.

Brookside person here. All of the interesting things you have inside the beltway, you can find here.

Organic, non toxic hair salon. Enlightened Styles. I have dark hair and the color they use completely covers my gray. I got a scalp massage and treatment recently, and it felt like something out of a luxury spa. It was so relaxing and refreshing

There may be home rentals. Zillow would be the place to look. There aren't apartment buildings here, outside of downtown Warrenton. You may be able to rent a long term Airbnb. I know people who've done that while seeking a new home.

Starting tomorrow masks are optional for staff and students. Masks are still required on the bus.

I'm not the pp who posted that listing, but the one that is in back of that house is Lake Anne. The one that is one street over is Lake Brittle. Lake Brittle is a county owned lake

What percentage of kids and teachers are not wearing masks? what are the percentages of vaxxed/non vaxxed kids there? How are the social dynamics playing out?
Looking for a place of unity and no shaming regardless of your choices regarding this.

According to my kids, a decent number of people wore them on Monday, but by yesterday the majority of people weren’t wearing them. They haven’t provided a percentage of vaxxed v. unvaxxed kids in the school system. I looked at it this way, my kids are fully vaxxed, masks are supposed to protect others not the wearer, so if most of my kids’ classmates aren’t wearing masks there is little reason to force my kids to wear them. My kids haven’t reported pressure or shaming either way. In the community here, I have seen any pressure/shaming either. Some people are still masking, some aren’t, no one seems to care either way.

My husband seems to think I'll hate it in FC since I hated Arlington when I left DC. But now I have two young kids and as long as I can be around some good people, my kids can get a good education, I can eat good food and get my nails done - I'll be happy Would love to learn of any FB groups you may be aware of with community members so that I can maybe meet some of you virtually in real life to learn more about the community there?

Also curious more about PWC for that other poster who seems to love it!

TIA

What did you hate about Arlington? From these messages it seem Fauqier has a different social bend than NOVA,
