The replacements have been loving and great teachers! I think the main issue frankly is the insane parents. They freak out about literally everything. This year they created these what’s app groups which has caused every little incident to become an international sensation. If the parents would just chill out then everything would be fine. Kids are doing great, have nice friends and learning a ton. I can’t imagine leaving. They try their best. We were at our local in bounds dcps school prior to Mundo and we had to pull our kid out of there. Mundo is night and day better.

Pobrecito…I used to think that too with my new HRCS when they were 3-4 years young and I had a 1st grader. Then every year it was something new and I would hear rumblings about issues with the grades 2 above us, then one above us, and then we hit 4th grade and ish got real and then 5th came and I deeply regretted not taking lottery spots at Deal feeders and Basis for 5th grade. Don’t worry, it will soon be your turn to be like us and give warning signs to those pregnant with their first kid now getting ready to move from their Downtown condo to Brookland for a yard. MV is an ish storm. Sure it’s good compared to $1600 daycare. Wait until 3rd grade.

NP edit: 3050 daycare. You must be an old.

Nope. I have a 4 year old. For us, daycare got a lot more affordable for age 3 including nextdoor at Scrilli for $1100 (prob $1200 now). That is what I was using to compare to MV for free, not infant daycare rates.

Yup even for infant we paid 1600. Of course you CAN pay more, but why?

As for MV, our language charter is also having some challenges this year IMO in pandemic recovery/ ongoing stance. Certainly did worse with actual virtual learning. Wondering who is doing any better and if we should lottery out. Want to keep language though.

Which charter?

The cheapest I've seen daycare hours preschool in dc is 1300 at some fed daycares. I'm guessing 1500 is still a steal and closer to 2k is more common. Jcc is like 2400.

I teach in another school division and it is a mess also. I haven’t heard many teacher friends elsewhere raving about how schools are handling things and the quality of teaching. We have several teachers who are just terrible but we can’t get rid of them because there isn’t anyone to replace them.

I dunno. We send our kids to our Ward 5 IB and there hasn't been any teacher turnover. There are plenty of problems in this city, but I'm not sure Murial is directly responsible for MV's implosion.

Also, MV has had a lot of turnover and staffing issues well before COVID.

I am the poster with two kids at MV, and they are actually in second and kinder. We have been there since the beginning, and honestly don’t know what you guys are talking about with it being a hot mess. The stats are actually that turnover is at or lower than most charters, and even with turnover the new teachers are just as awesome as the old. Bullying issues are so overwrought, have people never seen how second graders interact with each other? The worst thing that happened was everyone texting each other on what’s app all day and making every molehill Mount Everest. It is the parent community that I think has become the real problem there.

Ask a parent of older kids and you'll hear totally different things.

Unless PP is the parent of the bully and doesn't understand why other parents are upset about "normal" kid behavior.

Ya same. I've noticed whenever MV has a problem the parents are always like "but every school has this problem!" Not true.

MV has lost around 10% of its teachers since summer. I would love to hear if other schools are losing teachers at such a crazy rate, but I don't think it's the case. Please be specific if you have heard of schools with this level of loss this year.

MV did a whole presentation about their turnover and even called it unprecedented (10% = 17 people) is not normal - even by pandemic standards.

Staffing & Turnover

• Covid-19 has placed incredible burdens on everyone -
especially teachers.
• Pandemic burnout at our school like others is real. Research
says that schools are seeing resignations of 20 percent.
• Unprecedented number of unexpected resignations since the
end of summer.
• Approximately nine percent have left our school since the end
of summer (17 individuals).
• We have the benefit of a deep bench of talented staff - six
percent have shifted into vacant roles within our school.
• We are actively recruiting externally to fill remaining
vacancies.

If you emailed them instead of positing here you will know that this was a mistake from them.

Some parents are just crazy and they won’t be happy at any DCPS school.

Don’t be swayed by their marketing campaigns during open house season. It’s not a safe environment for children and going through multiple teachers in a year is terrible for learning and even worse for kids’ well being.

I chose MV over Bruce Monroe and I will do it again. I will never make a decision based on what I read in DCUM.
