This is a whole new dynamic of immigration to the United States because all these new immigrants are NOT undocumented they are asylum seekers so they are going to be eligible for a variety of benefits from cities, states and the federal government now and in a very short period of time. In the past the vast majority of undocumented workers stayed in the shadows and took jobs almost no one wanted at often wages below minimum wage wage.

This new wave knows their rights and many are very demanding. I was listening to This American Life and was struck by a Venezuelan family who had just arrived in New York City. They were bused to a shelter that was comprised of tents that was free including food and other basic necessities. That wasn’t good enough and they immmediately left and went back to the Roosevelt Hotel because they said they should have been given hotel rooms because they had children.

How many asylum seekers have come in the last three years? Two million, three million? That’s a lot of people who are going to be using a lot of services that poor Americans aren’t going to get.

We created this problem with our broken system. Asylum seekers cannot legally be deported without a hearing. Even though we know 80% plus of them are not going to be found eligible for asylum. Cannot legally work to support themselves until their status is resolved. And cannot get a hearing or have their status determined because there are not enough judges and staff to hold the hearings, and there's a backlog more than 5 years long. And Republicans are not doing a damn thing to change any of that.

Republican defenders keep claiming they have proposals yet where is there a specific proposal to address this? Give a specific citation.

Speaking their demands in Spanish while their posters are written in perfect English. It is almost like this is a coordinated invasion effort.

I think the problem is that "advocates" are running around in Latin America flooding and breaking our system with a lot of false promises. I was listening to a radio program where they were talking to a Venezuelan woman who originally went to Chile and was living there but since she had been a lawyer in Venezuela, she wanted to go back to practicing law. In Chile she couldn't manage the process to be admitted to practice law there. Yet for some reason she was told she should go to America where she would be allowed to. So she left Chile where she already had asylum to go to the US. People are being deliberately lied to. But it's not the Biden administration that's out there doing the lying to these people. The ones that are need to be found and held accountable.

Asylum seekers can apply for a work permit 150 days after entering the US.

So true

It will take years for the Republicans to FIX the border that Biden has totally broken.
It needs to begin with mass deportations of all the migrants who entered illegally under Biden. And, much stricter rules for claiming "amnesty."
A physical barrier would also help.

it was already broken.

OMG, what an absolute joke.

"Migrants were caught crossing the southern border of the United States more times in the past year than in any other year since at least 1960, when the government started keeping track of the data.

There were more than 2.4 million apprehensions in the 2023 fiscal year, which ended in September. That tops the previous record, set a year earlier, of more than 2.3 million, according to government data released on Saturday. During the 2021 fiscal year, there were more than 1.7 million apprehensions."

https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/29/us/us-mexico-border-migration/index.html

What part of "caught" and "apprehended" are you not understanding here?

If Biden wanted open borders we wouldn't even be bothering to catch them. Thus, your narrative fails, even based on your own citations.

Just curious what you think "caught" and "apprehended" means when it comes to Biden's border?

In Biden world, "caught" and "apprehended" means that the migrants transverse through several safe countries, enter the US illegally - not at ports of entry, are quickly processed by our over-worked border agents (who are not patrolling the border because of the sheer numbers of migrants entering), then are released into the US and given transportation to the cities of their choice. A small fraction of those entering are actually deported.
And, these migrants are not really vetted (that is a myth the left promotes) because many of them give fake names or their background cannot be accessed because of the countries from which they come.

"In Biden's world..."
Maybe you don't realize all this happened in Trump's world too?

Good grief. More deflection when you can't even form a cogent rebuttal to what's been happening for the last three years. Plenty of sources have already been cited showing that illegal immigration has never, EVER been higher than since Biden took office. If you're still denying that, sounds like a you problem.
DP

High-er. Sure. But it was at unprecedented historic highs under Trump, too. You flailing around trying to split hairs on this is like trying to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic. And if you're still denying the fact that Trump and the Republicans don't actually have any coherent solutions to address it, it sounds like you have a problem.

Except that the Republicans' proposals addressing the border crisis have all been posted - repeatedly - complete with citations. You simply refuse to read them and/or ignore them completely so you can continue trolling and making the usual fake claims. Begone, troll.

No, they haven't. I have not seen any links to proposed Republican bills that have any kind of coherent solutions or meaningful support behind them.

That means, for 150 days, we have to house and feed them, provide medical care et cetera.

HR2. Passed the House months ago.
The House-passed Secure the Border Act would change current laws governing who may apply for or qualify for asylum, and it would limit the ability of arriving aliens to be released from custody into the United States pending the outcome of their removal proceedings.

Correction: Biden created this problem with his promises, his rhetoric, and his policies that have incentivized millions to flood our border.
When you do nothing to secure the border, but work hard to allow millions to enter, then give them incentives to stay, more will come.

WH Press Secretary: "It is shameful" to send illegal aliens to sanctuary cities

The Biden administration only wants Republican-led cities at the border to suffer from illegal immigration.

Again: prosecute businesses who hire them - problem solved. And when I say prosecute, I mean throw some people in jail - no fines, straight to jail.

After 150 days all these millions of asylum seekers will be eligible for work permits! Now they are competing with poor Americans for low wage jobs, housing in poor areas, shelter space, food banks, etc. They will be using health care since it will be free as well as schools. This isn’t going to affect rich democrats but poor ones. Democrats used to be for limited low skilled immigration because it is not good for poor Americans.

There is no way that will happen. Not with this administration.

Democratic mayors - Brandon Johnson, Eric Adams (along with Governor Pritzker) - are pushing for the Biden administration to give expedited work permits to those who have entered illegally.

It seems to be the right think to do. For example, NY and Mass have right to shelter. I think it's a good thing these people go there to get what they need.

And as far as the government saying anything about flying these people places, this is exactly what FedGov does every day with illegal immigrants. They fly them all around the country.

No they aren't, because they are taking the jobs no one else wants. There is such a dearth of workers for places like slaughter houses and wiping butts in assisted living facilities that "those people" will be happy to take them and work hard to do as well as they can.

Republicans don’t want solutions, they just like bigotry. That’s why they all sound like white supremacists and Nazis. See? No solutions necessary, they just get to wallow in the mud like pigs.
