How many parent coached teams do they have? Is it a lot cheaper to be on a parent coached team vs a real valor team?

Again/ this stupid post. Who cares if it’s a parent coach, if they are better and effective than “professional” coach- case in point, EL, KL, KU, CS, SA, CR, GL… Yep, figure it all out folks!

Paying 3k for a parent coach---a person with a child playing on the same team--is so bizarre, I can't believe anyone agrees to do this.

When you try out, do they tell you Larlo's Dad is the coach? Or do they pretend they are looking for a real coach and the. spring it on you in August?

Or paying 3k for poor “professional” coaching and poor experience… it’s all the same. You’re willing to give and valor is more than happy to take!

Yep, the could and probably spring it I’m on you bc valor is very sneaky. Look at the top!

Can anyone ID the teams with the parent coaches?

1. Go to this URL: https://www.virginiavalorfc.org/2024-2025coaching-staff

2. Find the names that match the initials EL, KL, KU, CS, SA, CR, GL

3. You are a rocket scientist!

No, I think you misread the PP. To be fair it wasn’t well written. At least a couple of those are not parent coaches… they don’t even have kids. And at least one more has kids but doesn’t coach their team(s). I think PP meant that sometimes a parent is better than so called professionals and then used those names as an example.

Can anyone help us clueless parents understand what good coaching looks like? I’m being serious. I try to stay out of the way and don’t have any frame of reference for soccer coaching. I kind of think even a good coach can only do so much with a mediocre talent pool. Likewise, a group of talented kids can make a mediocre coach look good.

On brand for Valor. Not saying a parent can’t be a coach, but come on people. Lol.

Valor sure seems to have a lot of parent coaches.

That’s one way to cut your costs and overhead. It’s laughable.

Yes. Sometimes a coach will stay with a group for two years but that is rare. Also, there is a ton I mean a metric TON of turnover for the 3rd, 4th 5th team coaches. may many new coaches who come and go every year from those teams. they hire people without experience.

Yup, yup and yup. All true.

How does that cut costs? The parent coaches still get paid, and their kids probably get a reduced fee or no fee? It just increases the number of coaches and therefore the number of teams.

The coaches kids pay full price. The parent coaches are paid less than the professional coaches, but all the players on the team are charged the same price as players on Real Coach teams.

So the parent coached teams are more profitable to valor than the professional coach teams.

Agree on the last point and know of at least one team where talented kids are making a mediocre coach look good.

By no means a complete list but IMO a good coach should:

1. Be engaging with the kids, relate to them, and make them want to show up to practice. Also be able to discipline when needed.
2. Be organized in the practices. (We can tell when you’re winging it.)
3. Identify what the team needs to improve and do drills in practices to work on these things.
4. Coach appropriately for the age group. Simplify for younger kids, push harder for older kids etc.
5. Have a solid understanding of the game. Helpful indicator if they have played at a fairly high level but must also be able to break it down and articulate to younger players.

A girl can dream right?

I don't have social media--have they published the coaches or tryout information yet? I have not received anything over email but sometimes places just assume everyone is staring at their phones all day.

I suspect our coach is leaving.
