| Unfortunately, overall the quality standard for girls is much lower than it is for boys. At higher levels with the boys teams, you can't get away with not being a technical player anymore. It just doesn't happen. With girls you can definitely find your way on to higher level team without being technical. You can also have girls teams with good overall skill level but play like crap and still win. That's just how it is right now. |
| Agreed. If you lack the prerequisite speed and athleticism then it doesn’t matter if you have technical skills if your opponent can just run past you with the ball. You may find a niche role in the midfield but will be a limited player. If you have breakaway speed but limited technical skill, teams will take a chance on you up front in hopes that you can chase down long balls and have enough skill to put it in. But you have to have elite speed and again have a limited role because you won’t be able to build up play out of the back or midfield. I would strongly prioritize technical development but as you get older and have the baseline technical skill shift time towards speed, agility and endurance. |
I agree. They do not even need to run with the ball. It’s just a poke or hard touch to get the ball by the opponent and chase the ball down. If you are faster no need to actual have control of the ball. That is different vs running by a player while dribbling. The thing is if you are the fastest on your team you are just not playing at a high enough level. What happens at the next level when you go from being the fastest on the team to average? |
You are useless. |
|
Once you get into college, everyone's fast because they're selected for it. Speed is neutralized because everyone has it, and for some reason they don't have it, they're intelligent enough to know how to deal with it.
That's why 95% college soccer looks like crap too sometimes because it's just one big stalemate ping pong game. |
To you yes. |
| A fast athletic player will be even faster if they have great first touch/dribbling skills and they will be a little slower if they lack touch/skills. |
What good is that speed if it takes 3 touches to get control of a simple pass. |
|
The DI college coaches I’ve met focus on elite speed (not common at all) when recruiting forwards, as very technical players are common in ECNL.
|
Well, that covers one position. Are they looking for elite speed in the midfield too? Center Backs? |
+1. Or the first touch is so bad that it bounces away towards the defenders. |
They want elite speed for the outside backs! I’ve only met a couple of DI coaches not a lot. |
