08 Girls

Anonymous
We are new to the area. I thought that Arlington 2008 red was the best 08 girls team in the area. I see that they lost to Loudoun Red last weekend and also lost all 3 games at Jeff Cup this weekend. Loudoun won their first 2 before losing. Both teams in top bracket. Is there something going on with the Arlington team to explain these results? Was considering having DD tryout with Arlington 2008 this spring for next year because want her to play with high caliber team and everyone has been telling us they are considered the "team to beat" in the DMV. Loudoun is slightly closer. Anyone familiar with these 2 teams have any insight? Please only respond if you have actual information. Not interested in speculation. Any info on other 2008 teams that may be relevant welcome.

Reading into the results of u-11 girls tournaments or matches is peak level Us soccer stupidity. Half the kids playing at this age will drop the time they get to high school. And even then, by no means is a player a finished product. Real questions: what is the coach's and club's philosophies on the game and teaching it? Will my child enjoy this environment (players, coaches, club, etc)? What is the time commitment? Do they stand up to parents' wild requests and expectations of access?

OP here
This is why I started this thread. Don't need a lecture on how a team today will be different 5 years down the road. Plan to take DD to a few tryouts but are interested in some insider info on various teams. Did Arlington lose some players to another team? Does Loudoun have an amazing coach who is turning the team around? Is there a team out there that is building a strong core of players to be competitive? Just looking for info from a person with knowledge on the 2008 girls landscape.

FWIW, I have a friend who is a parent of a kid on the team. Here's what I've heard from him

Coach is first-rate, very demanding. Can ride girls hard during games, but is very available to meet with parents, takes an interest in player total development. Girls love playing for him, even though he can be vocal and sometimes negative during games.
They play possession-style offense - trying to build out of the back, using goalkeeper to reverse field, rather than relying on kick and run or long balls.
Girls get along well - they had three players from outside the club join the team this year, and are still getting the hang of playing together. One player is from Loudon and her dad still coaches there.
They have a forward who has some of the best soccer IQ out there; one of the top keepers in the area; two strikers that are very fast but struggle to possess the ball; and a center back that has a cannon of a leg
They were missing one player and had two sick players for the Loudon game
Not sure what happened at Jeff Cup, but the sense I got overall was that everyone thought it was a very strong team that is going to continue to improve.

The bolded tells me this is not a good Club.

Any place that relies on a cannon at center back is not the place you want to be. My kid is the smallest on their team and plays the entire game at center back. I don't think the kid has ever 'cannon-shot it' down the field. The kid can take players on, distribute the ball, through balls on the ground right on teammate's feet, give and gos---and is out wide to accept the ball from the goalie. If the kid were there to just boot it out of the back, I'd be walking.

I know arlington red had a few girls out(or coming back from being sick) in the Arlington Tournament. I think they may have had moved some girls up from a lower team? They did well in their bracket but fell apart in the finals of that tournament. It could just be a conditioning issue if girls were sick or just missing a few girls.

As for the Jeff Cup it could have been a really tough be bracket, girls running around the hotel all nigh, driving down the same days as the game(1 1/2 hour drive) and/or CCL just not offering enough competition. Who knows at that age. Though I heard one of the girls broken an arm Saturday at the Jeff Cup. That’s could have upset the girls. Again they are 10 and 11 years olds. Arlington Red and white are pretty good teams. That age group at Arlington is really deep and it will be very hard to break in to. I heard from parents of other clubs in the area and they are planning to go to Arlington. So they will get better again next year. I just do not see what the CCl will offer them- ie playing the CCl does not get you ready to play a top team from Texas or Michigan.

You should not really put too much stock in rankings or who is the best at this age. Everything will change at u13. I know arlington 08 are attracting a lot of attention. We will see if it continues with the 09s. Call the clubs and have your daughter attend a few practices. See which one she like the best, which has the easiest commute, see which girls are playing your dd’s position, get a feel for the parents, coaches and club.

With all due respect, as long as a center back can distribute the ball in an intelligent way, is it a disadvantage to have a center back who can also seize an opportunity to make the goal if it presents itself?

Not OP of comments, but just because a center back has a strong leg, doesn't mean the team is relying on the back to clear the ball. OP also says that they rely on possession style offense and building out of the back, reversing field through the keeper, etc. Maybe player in question also plays at other positions, or has demonstrated that strength in another way -- i.e, direct kicks, corners. Many U11 teams will bring a back forward to take kicks, doesn't mean the back isn't still playing part of a possession style team.

You should go to the CCL site and find a game schedule and go watch a couple of the teams play (both Loudon and Arlington are CCL). McLean may have schedule on website. You should also go to some practices. Every club I've even been at has been more than happy to have a kid interested in joining attend a couple practices to get a sense of the style and personnel.

What I wouldn't do is rely on what's posted here - good or bad, but that's just me....

Don't have a 2008 DD but I heard from a friend that PWSI 2008 is going to be the "team of the future". They have a good coach who is drawing interest from parents unhappy with their current club. Not sure where you live but maybe consider them too.

PWSI 08 is a good but small team.

Team of the future???how so? Because they beat teams in VPL?? Have they beat Mclean? Loudoun? Arlington Red??

Where are you going to be living? There are lots of good options but considering the time you will spend going to practices- I would tryout for the clubs that are close to you.

Triggered much? PP obviously saying it’s a good team with a good coach but players might be small or later bloomers. There are good teams outside CCL. Have you ever checked the DA or ECNL standings?

Great question. 703 traffic is insane and could limit your options.

The geographic distance and traffic in the area makes it very difficult for both clubs to be considered simultaneously. It really will depend upon where you end up living which club is more seriously considered above the other. And in all honesty, there is not enough real separation between the two teams to warrant fighting traffic for either team and certainly not at this age.

Neither club has a track record in national level leagues and college placement that demonstrates a successful history of development and college placement. But yes they win at young ages.
